OP your location has a huge affect on rates. In the burbs, its around $15-$17 for twins for a nanny with twin experience. You can find $13-$15 for a nanny without twin experience who might have daycare or nannyshare experience. In DC, it seems to be a few dollars more.

Don't believe salary you read on here.

15/hour for 40 hours.
22.50/hour for 10 hours.
We would pay overtime for any hours over 8 hours in a day.

But, at first our nanny was paid strictly by the hour...and wouldn't get paid on holidays, etc.

So after the first year, in lieu of a raise, she requested that we pay her a typical 'weekly' wage...$800/week. If we went over, or under in our hourly needs...there was no change in pay.

Honestly, she definitely is making out better than us in this deal.

She brings her child to work with her. She and her daughter eat almost three meals a day at our home, on our dime. She has no other responsibilities or duties outside caring for our children. Now, our kids are in pre-school for 10 hours a week...so she does 'whatever' during that 10 hours.

But...she represented a very punctual and dependable hire. Is she the most innovative and involved caregiver we could find? Probably not...but she is a safe driver, reliable (more so than our first nanny), and attentive.

It's always been a give and take...

I've never (since 2008) made less than $20/hr + benefits for twins. I don't usually work more than 45 hours though- so also less OT.

Don't know any good qualified nannies making less than $17/gross (and they usually have 10+ hours of OT)

The actual going rate though really will vary wildly and really comes down to what the candidates you interview and like give as their range. For some families their standards might get them a nanny they find good for $13-15. For others it may be $20-22. It all depends on a lot of factors but most especially how picky you are and how far in the future you are thinking. A lot of the $13-15/hr nannies end up replaced after a year or less when the babies are past the eat/sleep/poop stage and are clearly not keeping up with peers/bored/etc.

Think ahead. Can the nanny educate your toddler? Handle two active children in public spaces with ease? Drive then where they need to go? Have good English skills to communicate with you about finer details then eating and sleeping and dirty diapers? Have a good grasp on child development and what your children should be doing and when?

We found her through a neighborhood listserv from another family whose twins she helped raise. When we asked her for her salary requirements she said $575/week - which was absurd. We bumped it but frankly she's still a steal.

Think about what your requirements are - legal, citizen, drives, fluency in English, etc... and that will also help inform costs.

Good luck!

A legal driving English speaking nanny can find this easily watching ONE baby. You should expect to pay more than this OP.

Well then that legal, driving, English speaking nanny could take another job. PLENTY of nannies would be happy with that kind of a salary. Please stop giving us good nannies a bad name.

I don't believe for one second that you're a nanny. $650/week for 50 hours comes down to $13/hour AVERAGE. That is not a common rate for twins in any DC metro area for a legal driving English fluent nanny. It's just not. And taking feeling as though tht rate is low does not make someone a bad nanny and accepting that rate does not make you a good nanny. You may be a good nanny, but taking a below market rate is not what defines a good nanny.

I am a nanny. I make $16.75/hr for twin 1 1/2 year olds but I am not in the DC area. However, the PP is contributing to the nannies health insurance which usually means a slightly lower rate.

Friend in Arlington pays her legal, English-speaking nanny 15/hour for her twin girls. Her nanny is fabulous (I've used her for occasional babysitting). She cannot drive though.
