No one is saying to go behind their backs. No nanny in her right mind would comply with such ignorant parental demands, not for an 8 day old newborn. Where are your senses, woman?

As a professional nanny it IS your job to do the right thing for a newborn. If you don't, you're not a professional. Would you spank a child just because a parent wants you to?? Certainly not. You've got to do the right thing here. Never mind the egocentric parents. If you need to quit over this, so be it. This is so sad.

I had a friend that watched my newborn son for one night about a week after I had him. I was very sick, and she offered to keep him for me. She was amazed that he woke up several times and needed to be fed multiple times because her boys each slept all night right from the start. We know now that letting newborns sleep that much at a time is not necessarily the best, but maybe they are just not up on the latest medical findings. Buy them a recent childcare book, and show them why you are concerned. Your opinions are backed up by lots of facts.

Where the hell are you from? A newborn MUST be held or they are being deprived of essential needs. You do NOT need to comply with a request like that (although you may need to quit).

I would bring it up with the pediatrician like its something you are having difficulty with. Let the dr think you are the crazy one instead if blaming mom. Say something like- How do I keep the baby awake during the day, why is the baby crying when I put him on the floor to play, why won't he grab the rattles. That way the dr can explain it to you but mom can hear. I would make sure that mom understands the dr by saying things to mom while dr is explaining like- ohhhh, he is supposed to sleep for 18 hrs a day right now. That's good to hear. I would ask to dr for resources- books or websites that you and mom can look at together. Be sure to make her feel like a partner and not like you are right and she is wrong.
