This must be what is producing this low "market" all of these people like to rant about on DCUM.

Truth be told. We Americans are notorious liars, so why would anyone depend on random surveys as if they were some scientific means of collecting accurate data?
As one small example, people routinely report that they wash their hands after using the bathroom. When they put hidden cameras in public restrooms (not stalls), it's shown that it's a much smaller percentage of people that actually do it.

Lots of people like to brag about getting a bargain. Think about the dollar store. All those things are made in China with slave labor. So is lots of the junk you buy at upscale stores at the mall.

Some MBs are made to feel stupid if they reveal how well they compensate their dream nannies. They don't have time for that nonsense, so they turn it into a nonissue by minimizing what they actually pay.

Don't believe it until you see some evidence, such as a paycheck stub.

Why on earth would an MB lie about how little she pays her employees? If anything, I imagine people would inflate the amount to seem really generous or something. Who lies about getting a bargain on an employee? That doesn't make any sense.

Agreed. This makes no sense at all. But, of course, the nannies here always try to inflate rates, so I guess this imaginary logic is another sign of that.

Oh right. Nannies inflate rates, but MBs are pillars of honesty and morality and never lie. They aren't equally motivated to keeps rates low.

Well if you are paying a high rate, what do you gain by saying you pay something lower? Why would an MB want to keep rates low for everyone else but not herself? That's the part that doesn't make sense. Agree with a PP that I don't hear too many MBs talking about how much they pay (or what they pay for things generally) but my experience is that ladies in this area hate to appear cheap or as if they can't afford something.

+1. Cheaping out when it comes to your kids is frowned upon among the affluent parents I know.

Maybe because they don't want other MBs to tell them how much they're overpaying and omg they know this great nanny...no she doesn't speak English, but she's so sweet and they could save a lot of money... We see MBs on here ALL. THE. TIME. telling us how all nannies are worth the same, why would an MB who's invested in a pricier nanny for personal reasons want to have to defend that choice? Moms encounter enough judgment as it is.

In my experience, the only times the subject comes up is when a mom wants to hire a nanny and wonders what the going rate is for a comparable nanny or when someone needs to find a job for their nanny. In both cases, it is appropriate to give a range. Understating pay accomplishes nothing.

Sometimes those other nannies are stretching the truth.

Sometimes your friends are too afraid to tell you, how well they pay their nannies, for fear that you'd clobber them in the face, for paying a decent wage.

Commas aside, I agree. I don't think most parents are 100% honest about how they compensate their nannies... I've overheard my MB telling someone how much she paid me and it was less than I actually earn.

I can't speak for nannies stretching the truth or not because I never ask what they're paid.
