A large number of posters have serious reading comprehension skills. I hope they are not teaching small children to read. The OP clearly stated the MB saw her picture and made her drive an hour to an interview, only to then criticize her hair.

OP why are you here complaining? Clearly you think there's nothing wrong with your hair. Keep thinking that while you stay unemployed.

I'm an RN and one of our best CNAs has a nose piercing, two wrist tattoos, a tattoo behind her ear, and has colorful hair, although not as much as OP. It used to be platinum blonde with pink and blue chunky highlights, but now is a dark brown with purple and red. She puts the other CNAs to shame with how well she does her job.

I'll admit that before I met this CNA, I probably would have been one of the MBs that judge OP on looks alone. Now I know better and if OP was qualified and seemed like a good fit for our family, I hope I'd be able to look past the colorful hair.

You're fine op. There will always be judgmental douches out there. You're lucky to not have worked for someone like her.

OP here.
My previous job lasted 2.5 years, and the one before that 8 years. I have glowing references from every single family I have ever worked for.
I worked for many families and my hair was never a problem.
There is always going to be someone who will not want to hire me for whatever reason, you simply can't please everyone.
I was a little surprised my hair was an issue, but that didn't bother me as much as the fact that she knew what I looked like and still asked me to drive one hour without even interviewing me.

BTW, you took your belly piercing out? I have one too, but I never take it out. It's never visible.
I mentioned before I also have a nose piercing, but it's just a tiny crystal and it was never a problem.

I'm the PP with the creative friends, also I have a 16 year old daughter that *gasp*is exposed to these folks. They inspire and help her. She gets good grades, has solid school friends, doesn't touch drugs or alcohol, and is a super good kid. I'm lucky, for sure, but I know I'm also a good parent, I have taught her how large the world is. Keeping a job is important but being truly creative and leaving gifts for the world after you are gone is way more important.

And before you judge and say they are all a bunch of losers, one example is my friend that is a full out gay man, inked and pagan, who is in upper management at Starbucks. Another is in patient outreach at a cancer center. Many others have published books, are on tours with top headlining bands, and have art shows in places like Spain. I myself have an art show after my nanny job tonight.

So obviously, a bunch of low life heroin addicts. The PP that made the comments about pierced/tattooed people being less than human doesn't know SHIT about real work, dedication, love, and compassion. The folks I have befriended in my creative community wouldn't judge YOU over not having a tattoo. That is the critical difference.

Not that it is any of beeswax, but for what it is worth I think this is a minor issue. Piercings/dyed hair are not "professional" and some may make assumptions about you based on their picture of what these things mean. But, really, anyone whose been around shouldn't be shocked. She must really be overprotective or judgmental on this particular issue if she's hung up on "not explaining to my 4-yr old that people would chose to dye their hair different colors." What is there to explain? Some people like to die their hair. End of story. Kid wouldn't think twice about it. (Also, they never see ppl with dyed hair in public? Interesting bubble they live in.)

If it had been me, I might have preferred you not to have dyed hair. But I would have interviewed you, and if I liked you enough, this would not have been an issue to me.

Best of luck - you probably dodged a bullet. She sounds inconsiderate a high maintenance. That is a bad combination.

OP here.
I completely agree.

Then dont.

To pretend that you have to debate your kid about hair color is stupid. Our nanny has a tattoo, DD is 4 and said she wants a "taloo" of Elmo on her face, I told her when she turns 18 she can get whatever she wants.

Its about time for parents to stop pretending that they have no say in what their kids do. The nanny does not lay the ground work of the person your kid will become, you do. If you have to depend on the nanny for that, then you aren't doing your job as a parent.

-MB to a nanny who happens to be inked and pierced

You're the type of parent who would be okay with your child becoming a heroin addicted prostitute, so long as it happens when they're 18. Given that's probably when you started yourself. As they say, to each their own. For the rest of the world, we want what's best for our children and exposure to weirdos who have the priority of expressing themselves through tats and piercings vs. making sure they can keep a job is not the kind of example I want to show to my kids. But again, different strokes. If you want to post an email, I'll be glad to steer all of the druggy pierced and dyed weirdos that try to apply for my nanny jobs your way. Glad there's somebody for everybody!

You're the type of parent that will have the repressed kid come out as an adult to be the heroine junkie while people wonder why because 'he/she came from a nice family. ' There are stories like yours everyday.

We have become so intolerant on DCUM. This is her choice and it is part of her culture. What if the potential MB thought that cornrows, or dreadlocks were unprofessional on an AA person. Would you be so quick to pounce on OP?

I'm sure all the negative posters think that all male nannies are pedophiles.

Let's stop judging people by their appearance.

Are you kidding me? Her hair is part of her "culture"? Which one would that be?
Guess what OP, and everyone defending her, people make first impression judgements based on appearance. It's how the entire world works. OP is going to have a pretty tough time if she needs to whine and play the victim every time someone doesn't like her appearance.

Wow again.

A people's culture is defined by the people themselves. .. not outsiders.
Columbus and other European explorers thought their culture was better than the Native population. The natives had to conform or Die.

That is incredibly immature and unprofessional. Send her a text once you see her from afar? If you don't intend to hire her, just introduce yourself and say that it isn't going to work out, so you don't want to do the interview, but thank her for her time coming to meet you. I don't have extra time on my hands, but try to maintain the standard of behaving like a decent human being nevertheless.

Since when is being busy and gainfully employed a license to treat others with disrespect? Not in my world.

If you had really impressed me with your personality and qualifications, I would have hired you anyway. Even if you didn't impress me, you deserve the courtesy of me following through on the interview.

You must have extra time on your hands. Most working moms don't. If the hair was a deal breaker, I would have sent a text canceling the interview once I saw her from afar. An interview would have been a waste of her time and mine. I also might've told her to her face, but letting her know something which would be hurtful when the end result- no job-would not be fair or useful.

Idiot mom never should have agreed to the interview seeing op's pic on her profile. Simple as that. You guys are trashing op but if this had been turned around and op saw something she didn't like about the parent and flaked, she would have been flamed in typical dcum fashion. Cut the hypocritical crap.

Btw, judging someone on their appearance and not credentials truly makes you ignorant and speaks more about the kind of person you are than people like op.
