No we are not just “the help.”
You must not be a Nanny or if you are you likely have very low job morale which would be a very sad thing……
I am a Nanny. And have been for over twenty years.
As a pp said, we are doing a job and are not part of the family (hence "the help" expression).
Once you get that, you learn to ask for a specific day off if you really want it and that it's not agreed upon (like Thanksgiving).
I used to think "they're off, they'll let me leave earlier or don't ask me to work ...", it doesn't work that way.
Most families will want to use the hours they paid for (and I understand they need time to themselves of course).
So, yes there are very nice families out there that will treat you very well but honestly it's not that common.
