If you had integretiy you would have taken PTO if you wanted off or leave without pay. Its not reasonable to expect a paid day off just because.

How do you know they aren't working? Maybe they're doing work on their phone, or on call. Stop being a drama queen.

I am a Nanny. And have been for over twenty years.

As a pp said, we are doing a job and are not part of the family (hence "the help" expression).
Once you get that, you learn to ask for a specific day off if you really want it and that it's not agreed upon (like Thanksgiving).
I used to think "they're off, they'll let me leave earlier or don't ask me to work ...", it doesn't work that way.
Most families will want to use the hours they paid for (and I understand they need time to themselves of course).
So, yes there are very nice families out there that will treat you very well but honestly it's not that common.

I'm a parent and we have a nanny, and we give lots of paid time off (including this year two weeks at Christmas/New Years as we'll be traveling or off work ourselves). But if I randomly have an extra day off that isn't in my nanny's contract as a day off, you bet your *ss I'm going to enjoy my day off while the nanny works. Especially since often, at my job, those days off are announced at the very last minute (that week or the week before). I have no ethical responsibility to turn around and grant the same to the nanny whom I pay when I'm behind on everything and could really use a nap. You want the day off, take the day off. We also give our nanny a bunch of vacation days of her choice.

Nope, we are childcare. It has value and worth, but it is just a job. You are not 'part of the family' or anything like that.

At all jobs, including a nanny job, we are all replaceable. If you think you are not, you have weak boundaries with your nanny family.

I always worked Wed before Thanksgiving, off Thursday and Friday. What is your problem, lady? Once I remember asking to get off 2 hrs early Wed before Thanksgiving and take 2 hrs off my paycheck. That was my preference, I do not want to owe anything to anyone and parents do not owe me more than the rate agreed upon. Which is already a lot. I was paid $35 per hr at my last job.

It's not inconsiderate. It's your job. If you want a day off take it.

I am off but usually work Wednesday before thanksgiving but always off the day after.

Anyone else family had them come to work today claiming they had to work? Parents aren’t even working but had me come and will make sure I don’t leave early. Very inconsiderate I do t think I’ll be working here too much longer
