Op, you probably chased a cheap option. I cannot imagine anyone working with young kids for at least 5 continuous years needing instructions all day long. She probably had 3-4 short term gigs which means, in my nanny world, no experience to speak of.

It's obvious to understand that she didn't match your expectations. And of course, you are completely right since you are looking for an experienced Nanny. How come she wouldn't take the lead and still need instructions.

Don't feel bad, just move on and start looking for someone else.

The problem is that people out and out lie or don't mention their former nanny's weaknesses. Either they are afraid for legal reasons or just want to foist her off on someone else as soon as possible. I've had this happen a lot: major things like missing work about once a week. not cleaning up after the kids or herself, or not being a comfortable driver.

Yes we checked the references and we did a background check too. Several of the references were for shorter term positions, partly because of covid, or one family said they no longer needed her. My guess is that she’s run out of savings so she’s pushing to keep any role. Oh well, we’ll start to interview again next week.

OP - I used this strategy this afternoon. She seemed to be very surprised and after she left she sent a long email with all the stuff she had done this week. I feel bad because most of it was the wrong stuff and I don’t want to discuss it any further with her.

I wouldn’t mind having her come over to help out occasionally but I need someone with more experience and confidence

Why are you only paying her for one week if she's been there for two weeks. She's lucky she isn't working out for an employer who is cheating her out of 2 week's pay.

We paid her last Friday and we’ll pay her again today. We haven’t cheated her out of anything. We told her it was a trial and while it’s clear that she oversold her experience and wants the job, it’s also clear that she’s not going to work out here.

Thanks. It’s lots of little stuff. She doesn’t know the basics and I have to keep repeating everything. Also it doesn’t help that she showed up late twice this week. I know it’s the holidays but I’ve got to go back to work on Monday so I need someone who is reliable.
