This is why I negotiate for salary. My calculations include all the early times, late times, all the extra errands and days home from school.

Quitting time is 5 pm not 5:10 pm. Ten minutes extra every day is a half hour every week of her time that she isn't being paid for. She may have a class to get to, her child to pick up, or just wants to get home and put up her feet. If you want her to give you a 10 minute report of the day then change her time to leave but discuss it with her first. Does she give you a written synopsis of the day?

We screwed this up at the beginning and luckily figured it out after a couple of months. We asked if we could extend the end-time by a half hour. So we have the nanny until 5:30, and generally take over at 5:10-5:15. Oftentimes the nanny leaves a bit before 5:30 but whatever.

I arrive ten minutes before my start time and usually stay five to ten minutes after. I don’t want the kids to think I’m rushing in or out and prefer transitions to be leisurely. My employers are constantly rushing and rushing the kids and I don’t think it’s good for them.

Works for me.

Ten minutes or so is fine. My employers are wonderful but stop work exactly at my quitting time. It’s NBD. I usually am out the door in ten minutes.

Start time at 8? I’d arrive five minutes early to park, take off my shoes, put my lunch away, wash hands, etc.
In that example, I’d expect to be walking out the door at 5.

However, if nanny is meant to start at 8 and walks in the door at 8 (taking a few minutes to get settled) I’d expect the same for end time.

This. Some families, if you arrive 5 mins early they literally hand out the baby before you can take for your coat. I’m that situation I arrive exactly on time and will give 5 mins at the end of the day until 5:05pm.

If I’m paid until 5pm, I leave at 5pm. I will give grace to children for goodbyes, but if parents want to chat after 5pm for 10mins, that’s OT and I round up not down, to 15mins. I arrive on time, so should you, when it’s time for me to leave.

Ending times always have to be on time. If your nanny exit is at 5:00 pm; be ready and free to make the transition. So that means you should be free at last at 4:50 pm to let those 10 minutes resting to talk with the nanny how was everything during the day. So nanny can leave at 5:00 pm; her ending time.
