We have a child with special needs and are now hosting our third au pair from Proaupair. Our child has different needs but I would guess you could match with a great professional. Proaupair works with au pairs from Germany and Austria who have completed a three year degree in OT, PT, SLT, or special needs education. What you may need to do is pair your au pair with the appropriate therapists to give her/him direct training in how to help your child, at least at first, but an au pair from Proaupair will come with education and interest in helping children with special needs. It’s directly relevant to their chosen career path and we have found that au pairs are excited to work with professional therapists in the U.S. as it is an opportunity to learn on the job.

It is more expensive than other au pair agencies but there’s no way we would be able to find the right au pair outside of Proaupair given the extent of my daughter’s needs. So we really appreciate it!

Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

There's a huge difference between potty training a neurotypical child and a child with developmental delays. This child doesn't feed themself either. There's also an older child with autism. With both of these children, they definitely need a sn nanny.

This topic is deceiving as these kids don't have delays and have special needs.

With a halfway decent special needs nanny, ABA won't be necessary for potty training, as long as the child is high functioning. ABA would definitely help for feeding and other life skills, if he's behind enough that he can't feed himself.

OP this is the PP again who used both Pro Au Pair and APIA. We always found that our Brazilian APs were the best with our ASD son. They were just so warm and nurturing and love children and family. They also always felt that my ASD son was totally capable and treated him as such.

We used Pro Au Pair a few years ago and we also used APIA for our ASD son. Our Pro Au Pair AP was anything but a Pro - our APIA au pairs were all much better caregivers for our son and were much more willing and able to work with our therapists to get our son what he needed. So not really weighing in on whether an AP will work for you - that is for you to decide - but more on your specific question for Pro AP.

I have a son on the spectrum aso I understand where you are coming from. Like other, I think that the situation you describe is probably too much, even for a "pro" or "extraordinary" au pair. Wish you luck, I know it is challenge to find the right care for kids who need extra support.

His behavior isn't bad, but he does the "flapping hands" and sometimes has trouble communicating.
I'm looking into proaupair, mostly for the 4 year old. I want him to get ready for pre-school and get potty trained. I work from home and can't really sit him on the potty every 15 minutes because I have to focus on work stuff. I'm really hoping the au pair can take this on and also take care of the teaching-him-to-feed-himself thing. I mean, it's not super hard, but it just requires you to pay attention to him instead of being focused on other things (like work).
I don't really care if the au pair can drive or not, since the primary goal is to have this kid learn self-sufficiency skills, which can be done at home.

Has anyone had experience with the proaupair agency? I've seen some good youtube promos for it, where the au pairs take on special needs children.
Do you think I need to use proaupair, or can I use a regular au pair agency for my kids? They're not difficult to handle, you'd just have to look at them as being delayed for their age.

Look into a special needs nanny. No, a regular AP won't last more than 48 hours with your family, and I wouldn't even suggest proaupair.

This, and bring in an ABA therapist.

I agree with the PP. It seems like you need a professional here.
