I was recently speaking w/a friend of one of my neighbors outdoors.
She works for a family nearby & told me that she is working “off the books” for a family.
She told me the job was offered under the table.
She took it because she had lost her full-time previous position due to Covid.
Well the reason (I believe) this current position was offered under the table is because the family does not want to pay this woman minimum wage.
I am not in D.C.
Starting 1/22 our minimum wage is $15/Hr.
This family is paying their Nanny $12.75/Hr in cash + are saying that they are paying less than minimum wage, but since they are not reporting it on their taxes, etc. it all is evened out.
I find this outrageous.
Is this a seemingly fair deal to you?
Paying less than minimum wage in cash, but doing so because the Nanny does not have taxes deducted so it evens out in the end??
