You do realize that many people don't get paid for lunch breaks at their job.

Who? I have never had a job without a paid lunch break. I can go out,
Eat in break room, or at my desk. Nannies get a lunch break. Yn
You sound as cheap as OP

My question here is: when do your kids eat lunch, and do they still nap? To me it seems that, if possible, she should prep lunch and eat with the kids (which will still require them to play by themselves while she preps and cleans up, but probably not 30-60 min), or else eat when the kids are napping. Any reason that is not the case?

I know most people don’t get a paid lunch but when I was a nanny, I would eat lunch during the baby’s nap time which was 11-1. The older charge went to school until 2:20. So I would eat lunch, then clean up the mess from breakfast, the living room, and play areas etc. But I’d only take about 10-20 mins to eat. I’d always bring a prepped lunch. Mom worked from home but she paid me for the whole day because in case baby woke up I had to get right back to “working”. So it made no sense for her to not pay me. In the earlier days of my position the baby was fussy and would only nap 20- 30 mins at a time sometimes less. I have never accepted a position where they have a scheduled lunch break unless mom works from home and decides to take the baby for 30 mins and I absolutely won’t have to watch the child

If you are complaining that your nanny is not very active and has lots of down time. Reading its not a down time.. Make thing she is not totally happy with the Job. Probably you are paying her a very low rate. So you should raise your rate; provide a car for her to drive to different activities with your kids, different playgrounds, near and far libraries to visit, museums in dc, get a membership for the nearby "Club) where she can take the kids to the "pool" for summer and also give them some cash to treat your kids and herself; so they can have a pic-nic at the playground or just take them to eat out. As a experience nanny; there are lot of things you can provide to your nanny if you need her to be even more active and engage more your kids.

OP, it sounds like you are just unhappy overall w/your Nanny’s job performance.

First off, are you paying her a fair + competitive wage?
This ensures that you have access to a large pool of candidates, w/plenty of childcare experience.
Someone who knows what age-appropriate activities to do w/a child your child’s age.

Your Nanny sounds like she is just doing what all Nannies are doing.
She is eating her lunch which she is so entitled to do.
She sounds like she is bringing her own food from home, thus not eating yours.

I think it would be really unfair to hold pay from your Nanny just because she needs to eat.
Since it is almost impossible for Nanny employers to give their Nannies a lunch break in the true sense of the word, then of course you must pay her when she eats her lunch.

Must be troll. No sane person would even ask such a question.

Of course she's entitled to sit down and eat. Nannies of infants and toddlers have a break while their charges nap, nannies of school age children have a break while their charges are in activities and/or school... your children seem to be old enough that they aren't napping, so she's eating while they play independently.

Now, if your nanny isn't playing with the kids and she's not active with the children, that's different. Address those separately.

Yes, of course, our nanny takes a break from direct engagement with the kids to eat and use the bathroom!!

Reading to your kids and watching them play is NOT downtime!!!

By law, a household employee gets 20 minutes after five hours. That is supposed to be a full, complete break which isn’t possible for most nannies because they can’t leave their charges. Your nanny is still supervising your children while she eats so what she’s doing is completely acceptable.

What did you expect from a nanny, OP? Honest question. What do you mean by “active”?

Your posting for a nanny should be
I need a slave full time to care for kids with no
Lunch and bathroom breaks if you have the time to
Micromanage your nanny every moves

Why don’t you just take care of your own children?

Is it normal or standard for a full-time nanny to get a scheduled lunch break while on the job? During this time, she sits in the dining room while the kids are playing in the living room. She’s not really engaging with them but loosely keeping an eye on them. The eating lunch part is around 15-30 minutes. She usually prepares her lunch on the job—bringing sandwich or salad materials to wash and chop or food to bake in the oven—and all in all, with a bathroom break after, the lunch break is 30-60 minutes. We are paying her for working the whole day (we don't reduce it by 30 or 60 minutes). Overall, the nanny isn’t very active during the day and gets lots of down time reading with the kids or just sitting by them while they play. My question is whether all or most nannies are getting a scheduled lunch break?
