I don’t think you treat it any differently than a ful-time employee. A week’s vacation is just 20 hours pay (and not 40). We have a 20-hour a week employee. She gets her full 20 hour paycheck every week. If she’s sick, she doesn’t come in. If we are on vacation, she gets paid. She gets paid time off when we travel + 2 weeks that she picks.

I’m a nanny and worked one weekend job, 24 hours (7 to 7) Saturday and Sunday and had accrued sick leave as well as guaranteed hours (I was paid when they traveled out of town and on vacation) but no separate vacation time for me. I was also paid overtime for both days for the three hours a day beyond the first nine.

Accrued sick leave, and vacation time at your schedule— so a week paid at Christmas if you’re planning to not need her and a week in the summer if you’re going away, and then if she goes away you can decide about a third week or unpaid.

Definitely do accrued sick leave. The last thing you want is a nanny coming in sick and spreading it to your kids or you. I don’t think vacation is necessary but guaranteed hours are. If you go away for vacation, you still pay her.
