This is why families plan it out and budget for it. It's not hard to put away one week of pay per year for the nanny when the job ends.

Severance is not the same as a retention bonus or gift for a long-time nanny. I don’t know a single nanny who writes a contract with severance as one week of pay per year worked. That would mean no severance in the first year and only 1-2 weeks early on, but upwards of a month for a nanny who stays with a family for 5 years and is suddenly let go (due to something like job loss, presumably). Most contracts seem to be written for either 2 or 4 weeks of notice/severance, and length of employment doesn’t matter.

I have, all of my contacts with decent contracts and normal nf (nationally) have. This is standard.

You have to do what you're comfortable with combined with what you can afford. I would do a one week bonus representing each year our nanny had worked for us. You do what works for you and your family.

The nanny is quitting. I don’t expect 4 weeks of pay when I quit a job. Not even $1,000. A card plus $100 gift card and send her on her way.

I forgot to finish. I’m a nanny and at my most recent position that ended after 2 yrs due to relocation, I was gifted a one weeks bonus (around $1k), framed photo of me and my nanny kids, and a $250 gift card to purchase a nice winter coat (moved to a colder climate). And I was blown away by their generosity, it showed me how much I meant to them!

A cash bonus would generally be expected, especially after that long! I like the idea of a gift and bonus. Maybe a pair of figs (I’ve heard they are the best of the best) and $500?

I would give a 4 week bonus (because I love the hell out of our kids' nanny). Maybe also give some really good hand lotion for all the hand-washing she'll have to do as a nurse. Keihl's or Weleda Skin Food.

Hello, Our beloved nanny of 4.5 years is leaving us in the coming weeks since she has graduated from nursing school and is moving on from being a nanny. She really is incredible and is even help train our new au pair this week. My question is what is appropriate to provide as a departing gift. We are having our son gift her a really nice necklace symbolizing nanny love and we were thinking a gift card to Figs for nice scrubs. Is this enough? IS a cash bonus expected? We love her so much and I don't want to misstep here.
