While it is more understandable to hear that you had to take a day off for your dog, it still is unprofessional and really immature.

My Father passed while I was in finals in college.
While I was in shock and grief, I still studied hard to pass my exams.
Because my father wouldn’t have wanted me to throw away my education.

Grief is real, I truly acknowledge that fact.
But when grief affects your career - then that is a clear sign your priorities are whacked.

Under the table = accepting less pay, which lowers the hourly rate expectation
Under the table = not paying taxes. Guess who foots the bill when they go to the ER and can't afford to pay the bill? Tax payers.

A subpar nanny has nothing to do with me. They don’t give me a bad name bc my work speaks for itself. Just like the cheap and horrible DCUM families don’t represent the families I have actually worked with.

You may be able to take time off whenever you want, but some of us have to give a good reason if we aren’t giving the contracted amount of notice. Having a pet die does not negate my contractual obligation to provide a minimum of two weeks notice that I’m going to use PTO. I can use sick days when I need to, but as much as I am an animal lover, I wouldn’t feel right about using sick days unless I was actually sick. I give a minimum of a months notice for vacation. The only way that I would get around the contracted amount of notice is for bereavement associated with a human member of my family or a medical appointment that I can’t move.

My mom died on a Saturday and I worked on Monday. 0f course I was sad and heartbroken for many months. I took bereavement days when my family came in for her memorial two weeks later.

I never took nor expected time off for my sweet dog.

The last couple threads regarding time off for the death of a cat and getting an illegal employer to pay your medical bills are giving all nannies a bad name.

First, you don’t take off work because you’re sad!

Second, you get healthcare insurance. You do not accept payment under the table! If you are not earning enough, you up your credentials and skills (online classes at least) and find better paying nanny jobs.

Third, you take your job seriously. You aren’t a teenage babysitter anymore.

I’m a well-paid and well respected nanny who loves being a nanny and chose this field. Stop making us look bad!
