I can't see how it's an issue for anyone else.
I disagree. I live in the suburbs, but I travelled down for Obama's inauguration, and transportation all over the region was impacted. Trains and busses were packed. Traffic was at a standstill on major thoroughfares. Everyone was friendly and peaceful, but it still was difficult traveling. Add in that the threat of violence, and I don't think it's an OK thing to ask.
If someone is a single parent who absolutely has to go to work that day, or a couple where both parents do, such as an ER doc, or a police officer, then I think they should invite the nanny to spend the night before and after, unless she has a safe space within walking distance. Otherwise, I think the nanny should be given the day off, with pay.
