Nanny here and I would not accept more money for this. It’s part of an ever changing job and better for the children.

It depends. Was this part of the discussion at all when she was hired? Is she otherwise happy with compensation?

She has not done educational activities per se. But she is playing with the kids, reading to them, and taking them on long walks. Overall, she has done a great job bonding with them over the last month. I will talk to her about the idea of including some educational activities. I am happy to help with props and ideas.

Thanks for the followup. I think it’s fine either way to give her some reaources with examples of what you’d like to see them working on but it’s always helpful to be clear in your own mind about all the possible outcomes that would work for you. It sounds like you would be fine giving her a packet of stuff to work on each week but also fine if she wanted you to order a specific kind of workbook or if she just put together some ideas of her own to do.

I wouldn’t be offended. When I was a nanny I did educational activities with my charges and the parents loved it.

The kids are 3 and 4. If she’s reading to them and taking them outside for exercise, then she is doing her job. If you want an educator, I hope you are paying a premium for that.

Try suggesting activities but not with a time constraint. Recogonize that both you and the nanny are in unfamiliar territory . Get on the same page. Strive for a mutual relationship that is based on the a common goal which is obviously what is best for the kids.

What is the nanny doing now? Do you know how much prep time she has put into it so far? Are you open to her saying she’ll think about it or reject it, or do you expect her to jump on board immediately? Are you realistic about schedule changes and nanny preference (some prefer arts and crafts while telling the story, others tell the story while singing a song, then do arts and crafts, others may skip the story)? Are you planning on just handing her the things the morning you want them done (likely to cause issues, since she time to look through the materials, and storytelling is far different than reading a story)?

A better option would be to give her the urls and ask her to spend part of naptime/quiet time once or twice a week preparing materials for the following week.

I am a nanny and I would be happy to get new ideas and input. Please don’t hesitate to talk to your nanny.

Hello,

This is the first time that we have a nanny. Before the pandemic, the kids (3&4) were at home with me and later at preschool. We now have a nanny who seems wonderful. The kids seem to love her. I have been doing some research and found some age-appropriate resources of things that the nanny can do that are similar to what the kids were doing at preschool. It involves print-outs, story telling, crafts, etc. As a nanny, would you be offended if I asked you to spend a couple of hours each day on those activities. I am happy to do all the prep the night before.
