Several times, we had an au pair accept a connection request only to tell us a few hours later that they had matched with someone else. We did offer to pay twice the stipend during weeks when there is no school/camp for our two kids and we offered to pay the extension fee, which I think helped make us more competitive. But while money is a factor, most au pairs are still primarily looking for a family that is a good fit for their personalities and skill sets and, of course, location matters too. For those who want to be in California or Florida, there is little you can do to attract them to DC.

I should add that despite the competition, we ended up finding three good candidates who were very interested in us and we had to choose between those three. But it wasn't an easy process.

Our current au pair is scheduled to go home this fall. We'd like to get another, but are despairing of our chances. Does anyone have a sense of what the competition is like for in-country au pairs looking for a second year starting this fall? Any details/anecdotes appreciated. We're in the DC area and have used CC and APIA in past but open to whatever.
