Yes and no. I know several nannies who only work off the books and the agencies won’t touch them. I also know that I’m not willing to wade through the 100+ families wanting to pay next to nil just to find one family willing to pay a normal (not spectacular) rate, so I go through an agency that gets everything squared away first.

Totally agree w/ the word of mouth.

That said, our current nanny/housekeeper came through Care.com, but for the 5 years prior (during which time we had 2 nannies) we found our great nannies through neighbors or neighbor connections/referrals.

This and only this. The better nannies come from word of mouth. Join multiple neighborhood list serves and Nextdoor.

Stay away from care.com. Lot of spams. My own experience. This site it's Great, a couple of friends and myseld have found our perfect fit right here. Also you can try posting in your neighborhood board. Good luck.

I also used nanny poppinz and worked with susan. I agree with the previous poster recommendation. Susan is amazing. It does cost money though.

Where have folks found their favorite nanny’s in the DC area? We’ve been looking at agencies like White House Nannies and Nanny Poppinz but they seem to be much more expensive than job boards like Care.com, does anyone have good or bad experiences with these or recommendations for places where you found a great nanny? (We’d normally try and ask friends but we just moved to DC in December so we don’t have a ton of friends with young children here yet)
