I didn't wipe my own butt until the ripe old age 7, and I remember very well the struggle. Ended up with a PhD. This kid will be fine. Relax and just help her out.

My 5 yo twins try, but they don’t do a very good job and they know that so they usually ask for help, which I don’t have a problem with. I do think I’d have a problem if they wouldn’t wipe at all, but that’s a parent’s job, not yours. You can encourage her to wipe, but don’t push it if they don’t. Maybe they have their reasons (like she doesn’t do a good job, or she wastes TP)

I would roll the toilet paper for her and watch to be sure she’s wiping correctly. Repeat if necessary but wouldn’t continue to wipe her....or she’ll never learn

A five year old should be able to wipe her butt clean. Obviously, you haven't taught her. Maybe she will get the message when her classmates tell her she stinks.

I do the first three wipes with my 5yo son then he does the rest. It's less gross that way for him and he's still practicing. Next month I'll do two wipes, then a month later only the first one and then hopefully he can just do it and i can check.

Continue to ask her to practice together. "You try it, and then I will help". Praise her big time when she does it. She will get it.

Some mothers scold kids who don’t wipe well enough to keep their underwear clean.

Encourage her to wipe with toilet paper. If that doesn’t do a good enough job, she can use baby wipes, toilet wipes or a washcloth. But I agree with a PP, this isn’t that big of a deal right now.

I taught my kid at 4, right before K ( late summer birthday) because I wanted her to know how to do if she needed to poop at school. She should be able to do it at 5 but its not crazy late.
Keep encouraging her and maybe throw in a reward for when she tries herself and doesnt ask for follow up from you.

Plenty of five-year-olds still need assistance or a secondary check.

Just keep suggesting and trying to get her to do it first - then you’ll help. That said, this is really a parents’ job. If they don’t encourage her to do it herself, there is nothing you should do.

I’m surprised she can’t/won’t do it at five. Our preschool wouldn’t accept her if she isn’t bathroom independent.

Give her a break. If I was 5 years old right now I'd be pooping my pants and wishing for diapers.
