Can people comment with how much they are actually paying? I will also be hiring a nanny in the fall for a 2.5 year old and 5 month old. Our 2.5 year old will attend a 3-hour preschool in the morning, come home for lunch, take a nap, and then need the nanny’s engagement until we get home. I want to pay the nanny fairly but also want to leave room for raises over the 4 years we plan to have a nanny. Thanks for providing specifics!

You'll see candidates asking for anywhere from $18 - $25/hour (with occasional under/over that amount). I would plan on something in the $20 - $24/hour range. How many hours do you need? Will you require driving/use of nanny's car?

You’re saying an extra $2-3. should be enough for adding on newborn care?

Hell no! I'm saying $5.00 for extra kid is too little. At least $10/hr more. Infant and toddler together too much. OP should have thought of expenses prior to having 2nd child.

You're either out of your mind, or a troll. Nobody bumps up $10.

$5 to $7 an hour increase
If you can, please consider adding some other perk(s) not limited to but including transportation allowance, increase in vacation days.

A previous poster stated it best - please convey to your Nanny that she is valued.

I agree with the poster above who said to offer more if both children will be staying home. Although, as a past nanny I hated when the family would send the oldest to school because of a new baby. It would mess up sleeping schedules and the baby would be schlept around to go do pickup when it could’ve been napping etc . It was MUCH easier to keep both home especially if the age difference is only 2 years. If the age difference was 4 years then I didn’t mind. But Hmmm past charges were newborn and 2 years old when I started and it was a hassle lugging around a newborn for pick up and younger sibling never got good naps

An increase of $5. an hour is the usual expectation for an additional infant in the family.

It depends on a lot of factors.

1. Is current nanny interested in staying? Many nannies only work with 1 child. If she’s willing to stay, how much does she want?
2. How much are you currently paying?
3. Would hours change?
4. Is your older child going to stay home, go to preschool part-time or go to full day daycare?
5. Are you adding or subtracting any child-related duties?
6. Are you planning on not needing the nanny during maternity leave?

I’ve seen anything from $.50 to $7 quoted, depending on what else changes and if it’s the same nanny or if the position will be delisted for start at the end of maternity leave.

This is all NYC, so you may need to adjust a bit. I don’t know much about MD, but in my experience with this site rates are pretty similar everywhere.

Nanny here! I usually ask for a $5-7 hourly increase and settle for $3-5, depending on what they plan to do with the oldest (starting school, still home, half day programs, etc). If you’re planning to keep both at home for a bit longer, plan to make your offer a bit higher. If you can’t afford another $5/hr, consider a smaller raise and some extra PTO or paid vacation days, or maybe making Friday a half day (paid) if you have the flexibility. Likely the most important thing to your nanny is that she feels appreciated in all this and not like she’s being dumped on I would’ve been happy with a $1 raise and a few extra days of PTO if my family came to me.

Hey everyone! Looking for advise for nanny pay rate. We currently have a nanny for our 1.5 year old. We are expecting our 2nd in April and we are determining what pay rate would be fair to offer for when I return to work. The oldest would be 2 and the newborn will be 4 months when i return to work. We can't afford to pay the nanny double and don't know if that his expected. I know an increase would be fair as she would have two kids to care for. What are recommendations on increase or pay rate for Silver Spring, MD?

Thanks!
