Ok so a cheap motel that is sketchy and likely may not be super clean would have been better than staying on a couch in a relative or friend’s home? This makes zero sense.

This is crazy, so if the family can't afford an hotel for themself, they should get one for the au pair? or that means they can't afford an AP as we hear a lot on this forum?
OP, you did the right thing and AP is showing you her true color! I mean what if the power outage lasted 2 weeks, the family will have to pay a motel for two weeks while they are staying with relative?? This is how we get entitled APs, all this unreasonable high expectations families who are well off set on other families!

Only a princess would be upset to not being offered a hotel room in that kind of situation.

You did what you had to do. Staying at a relatives' house, even on a couch, is perfectly fine !

She can be irritated that power went out but if she actually is irritated you didn’t offer a hotel; that’s silly.

Unless you stayed at hotel there is no reason to offer her a hotel. Life happens. She needs to understand that. You invited her to stay with you at your relatives place and she declined. Don’t let this to bother you. She made her choice!

Don't worry. She probably had way more fun staying with her friend than being stuck at a relative place or a small hotel room with HF family!

No. That's totally out of your control and probably happens to most families at least once while hosting (it's happened to us). Now if you stayed at a hotel and didn't let her do so, that would be wrong.

Our power went out for the entire weekend. We offered AP to stay with us at our relatives house--she declined and decided to stay with a friend and their host family. Were we obligated to offer a hotel?
