I never allow my charges to watch TV or play on any screen. If the parents chose to on their time - fine. I have better things to do with my charges.

As a Nanny I used to let my kids watch about an hour in the afternoon, when they gave up nap, so we could all have some down time. It was only PBS and they were over 2.

Parents let the kids watch TV in the evening and had Nintendo handheld games.
Kids both went to college and are doing well in life.

I did a lot of outside time, reading, crafts etc in an 11 yo day, so I didnt feel bad about 1 hour of TV.

Now I am a Mom DD is 7 we watch a movie once or twice a week and she has the Tablet for a few mins before school as long as she is ready. She is doing just fine too.

22.03 again. After witnessing how much time kids are on screens in school now (more than 50%), I feel like I want to provide non-screen time. We didn’t grow up with tablets in class. Computer class was a set time once or twice per week (if that). I remember watching educational movies during inside recess, but class time didn’t involve media until high school (when we were comparing book form vs movie version vs theatre for Shakespeare).

To me, when you have a child who is more comfortable grabbing a screen instead of talking or playing, it’s a problem. But that’s what I’m seeing, and it’s why I stand by my limits. I can require the teacher to inform me of how much time a child spends in front of the screen, what they are doing and why. I can’t make a fuss about the amount of screentime at school without separating that child from the rest of the class. I choose to manage the home/school balance this way after careful thought.

I haven’t seen any tangible evidence that children who were exposed to the T.V. set earlier in life had learning, social, health, etc. deficiencies more so than those that were not exposed.

I think parents just do not want to pay someone to let their children sit in front of the boob tube all day.
They would rather have the kids do that once they get home from work.

I let the older kids watch a show or play video games on their kindle after school for a little while. Kids need down time, and tv is just fine for a few minutes a day. I watched tv after school and turned out just fine and they will too. Schools use screens as learning tools, ways to introduce new ideas or expound upon old ones. A truly good teacher will teach using many methods, including videos.

1. No screens until 2.
2. Limited educational screentime at 2-prek, presented as a goal to be earned.
3. After kinder starts, screentime as required for school, with opportunities to earn more through attaining goals (set by child).

Depends on family. As for my own kids who are 2 and 7 they get unlimited screen time. They do not watch all day though. The older one started reading ( and I mean reading) in PK 3 the younger one who just turned 2 few days ago knows all letters, numbers and shapes... one of children I’ve watched for 5 years never watched tv up until he turned 4 can’t read yet (just simple words like cat, dog etc) - he is in 1st grade

I watch this one boy. He start watching ABC videos around 9 months old. He is now 4 years old speak 4 languages and is very smart boy.

I watch another boy next month he will be 3 yrs old. No screen time at all. He go to speech class twice a week, behavior therapy once a week, still dont know how to count 1 to 10, no motivation in learning etc.

Depends on what the family prefers. I’m neither for or against tv. I’m completely indifferent.

Never. Our nanny is more against screentime than we are.

You can’t prove a negative, PP. You have no idea how much better off they would have been had you avoided screens until after 2 and then limited exposure. I don’t think that the AAP’s recommendations are put in place for no reason.

Just google it. The research for screen-avoidance is compelling.

And no, OP. As a nanny I never allow screens when I’m working. I don’t even know how to turn the TV on!
