Well, my former employer has sent me two bonuses after I left. He couldn’t afford a bonus while I was there, has been able to do it twice since, and he wanted to show how grateful he was for all I did for his kids. Ymmv.

Not true. I left a non-profit at the end of February, and got my bonus check in the mail in September (our FY ran July-June, so it was for 8 months, not 12). I was surprised, that's for sure.

I would likely have given her the bonus on her last full time day as a parting bonus. It’s not necessary of course, but a nice show of gratitude.

We have had a wonderful nanny for the past 3 years for our DD. We normally give her a Christmas bonus of two weeks pay. Our nanny is sadly leaving us to return to her home country in West Africa for personal reasons. Her last day was in November but she still helps out from time to time before leaving the states permanently. Would you still pay her the usual Christmas bonus despite the fact she is not technically employed?
