I think I understand what you're trying to say. Why would I go through nannies quickly if I'm offering a $300 bonus after 15-20 days of work, and 1-2 weeks of holiday bonus otherwise?

There is simply no way that nannies routinely get 2 weeks of pay as an annual bonus. If that were the case this forum wouldn't be so filled with nastiness. It's absurd to tell OP that hundreds of dollars in bonus money is required for a new employee. Absurd.

PP above is correct: one to two weeks salary is standard for hourly, in-home (domestic) workers. And yes, it really has always been this way (I just asked my grandmother who said even once a week housekeepers get one or two weeks salary),

But in OP’s case of just one month of employ, I think $500 is great. It shows goodwill and forward thinking.

That you can’t afford a typical hourly-wage bonus is understandable and nothing to be ashamed of. But to say you don’t find it necessary to give a bonus of thanks to the woman who care for and loves your child is very telling of a bad employer and unkind person.


Believe it or not, one or two weeks salary is absolutely standard - and has always been standard - for household, hourly employees.

Thanks! I was thinking $500 since she’s only been with us a couple of weeks.

We do two weeks’ pay in cash. For just one month, however, I’d probably do $500.

If you’re hoping for her to stay on, you need to give her some holiday cash. Depending on how much you like her, do somewhere between 2-5 days worth of earnings. Her nanny friends will all be getting $$$.

Do you give a holiday bonus (and if so, how much) if a nanny has only been with you for about a month before the holidays?
