I do feel bad for the kids, however. The little ones are always the ones to get hurt. However, there really is nothing else you can do.

Please let us know what happens tonight when you tell her you are quitting and won’t be back.

I would have worked around it. I would have told my family to fly in on Tuesday night. They are coming early Wednesday morning and we have made plans. I emailed her the request on 11/11 and she replied a few hours later I could have 11/27 off with no problem. She even put in the email her family would be there to help. I asked more than 2 weeks in advance so it's not really last minute.

I am honestly curious as to how you would feel if she would have said no to your initial request..? Would you still be so angry or would you have worked around it? It isn’t common to ask off with such little notice, at the same tim, she did say yes. Just curious, though.

2. Employer said yes.
3. Op made plans.
4. Employer decided to have Op work, rescinding day off.

8. Employer will either have a larger unemployment insurance payment, or employer will get hit for not paying unemployment insurance.

I wouldn’t back down on taking the 27th off. Stand firm and don’t waver. No negotiation. “You gave me that day off and I have made plans that so cannot change now”.

You don’t have to quit over it, OP. She cannot force you to come to work. The worst she could do is fire you and then you’d get severance and unemployment.

You are so smart to have what Humphrey Bogart called, “f*ck you money” saved. You can walk away from any job with a big “f you”.

But so don’t think your situation will warrant it. I bet your employer backs down when you stand unwavering.

I think your plan sounds good, OP. Since you're quitting anyway, have a new job lined up for January, and feel financially comfortable with a bit of a gap between jobs...

The only thing that might make me reconsider is you've been employed with the family long-term, and they have historically given good holiday/end-of-year bonuses.

When Nannies want to quit sooner rather than later - it is usually because the Nanny has been treated bad by the parents.

Rarely does a Nanny leave because of her charges.

I find it rude that your MB told you you could take the 27th off, then backtrack and state that you must work that day after all.

You gave her plenty of notice.
Since you are fortunate to scrape by until your new job begins, then I would just quit.

OP, you have every right to refuse to work on the 27th without giving your notice and leaving early. Your employer told you that you had the time off and you made plans. You don’t have to quit early over this or explain it further to her. You are simply unable to work on that day. End of discussion.

I have another job lined up starting in January. I'm still in college but I am done with the nanny gig. I love the kids but cannot stand the parents anymore. I requested off 11/27 last week. MB said it was not an issue because her family would be in town. She emailed me today and said I could not have the full day off. She did not realize how busy she would be with airport pickups and grocery shopping and wanted me to work from 9-3 pm. I have my own family to pick up at the airport and grocery shop for. She knows I have family coming in. This is just one of many examples of the inconsideration I put up with. I replied back "That does not work for me. I've made plans with my own family". She replied back we could discuss it further tomorrow.

I have been thinking all evening and looking at my finances. I am very thrifty and have savings where I would be fine without working for at least 3 months. I was planning to give my notice 12/6 and have 12/20 be my last day. With the turn of events I have been thinking about leaving sooner. I would go in tomorrow and give my notice, refuse to work 11/27 and see what happens. If they give me any flack I can always make tomorrow my last day.

At first I was so upset but now I feel I have better control of the situation. I should not be surprised that she thinks there is anything to discuss. I almost hope she gives me a hard time so I do not have to go back on Tuesday.
