Grow up and find your own jobs. Not everyone can afford $25 an hour and reality is most adults don't make that much. If a parent makes $20 an hour, minus taxes and all that, there isn't $25 an hour to pay you. Day care is not an option for obvious reasons. My guess is medicaid or someone else was paying for an aide and that was the pay rate.

Why don’t you have a backbone is the better question.
You should be getting paid while your NF is on vacation. You should never feel pressured into any position and should have the ability to stand up for yourself. Regardless of what the family is going through that is not your concern. You interviewed for a position. If they cannot afford it that has nothing to do with you.
In the future, have a contract and have your rate set. Don’t let others speak for you or speak for your rate.

Why should she work for $300/week? Would you work for half your pay for a few weeks? Hell no, you wouldn't! The family with the sick child should have hired someone a long time ago and stop screwing nannies!

I think what your MB did was just awful.
She should never have assumed that you would work for such a low wage.
And she most definitely put you in an awkward position by telling the family that you would.
She showed total disrespect on her part and I would give her my walking papers as soon as I found another position.
And I would call/text an apology ASAP to the other family & explain that you simply cannot work for the rate your MB told them.
I would be so angry at my boss.
Angry enough to quit right before their vacation, thus ruining it.

OP said gap in income so I'm assuming she's not getting paid while her NF is on vacation. Which is not surprising given the MB lowballed her to her friend.

It’s very unfortunate that their child is battling cancer, however, just like they need the extra hands so they can work, make money to afford their bills, so do you. I would send them a text or phone call and let them know you apologized and was put on the spot but you cannot afford $300 per week and you never told your MB that. Then, I would look for another job and quit before they go on vacation. Some of these parents are nasty and your MB just showed you what she thinks you’re worth and doesn’t give a damn about you.

You need to have a backbone. "My heart absolutely goes out to little Janie and your whole family. Dealing with cancer is a terrible ordeal. I'm very sorry, but I can't afford to pay my bills if I am paid $300 a week. So while I would really love to help you out, I just can't afford to. My landlord demands rent be paid no matter what."

If your employers are going away they need to pay you, do you have guaranteed hours? Also, they can’t dictate who you work for or how much you will charge them.

MB found temporary work with a friend of a friend. The family has a little girl who is undergoing cancer treatment. I went to meet the family and to discuss pay and as soon as we started discussing pay the mom looked surprised and upset and told me my MB promised them I’d work for a very low wage. Like $300 week for 50+ hours. I felt trapped and really bad for this family because they clearly are under a lot of stress so agreed.
