Op, honestly I wouldn’t have spoke to your boss about your car until the end of your work shift. I would have arrived to work using the metro or car service and then when she got home (or dad) tell them about your car situation. You could have said something like:

Texting to say that your car broke down so you will be taking the bus or an Uber to work and so will do walking activities with the kids instead of driving activities? That shows problem solving and initiative.
Texting that your car broke down so can you come to work late because your preferred mechanic isn’t open sundays? That shows that you plan to make your problems her problems.

Half vent, half advice needed here.
I was recently hired for a full-time Nanny position.
Last Wednesday was my first day.
Everything went perfect & I was looking forward to starting my first full week with my new family.
Then last night, my car broke down.
My mechanic shop is closed today (Sunday) so the earliest I can have my car looked at is tomorrow.
I texted my new MomBoss + explained the situation.
She is an Elementary School teacher and tomorrow is her first in-class day.
Plus she doesn’t have a back-up childcare plan in place yet.
So I HAVE to be there.
Why oh why does something like this have to occur so early into my new job??!
Argh!!!!
