You should stay home with your child if you cannot trust your nanny. Presumably, you have references from former employees and have done a criminal check so there is no reason for cameras.

Make sure DH isn’t trying to find the nanny acting stupid.

I am a nanny and like cameras. My employers have them in his bedroom, his play area and facing the front door. They have a separate camera-monitor over his crib that I watch for nap.

Don’t go crazy, OP, and don’t expect close ups! You will see your child and, best of all, hear his/her laughter.

We have one mounted high in DD's bedroom in the corner, so we can see the whole bedroom.

A second one mounted high in the common area - I can see the kitchen, dining room, living room and hallway towards bedrooms.

Be sure that it does not point toward the bathroom and would not be able to see in the bathroom if the door is open. Also be sure to be direct with your nanny about the cameras.

I find the cameras far more useful with DH than the Nanny because DH just flips the TV on and settles down...he makes the Nanny look excellent.

The intended PURPOSE of a Nanny Cam(era) is for parents to make sure their Nanny is not abusing and/or neglecting their children.

Period.
However many parents use it to micromanage from afar which does not bode well for a successful Nanny/Parent relationship.

I have heard of parents getting annoyed at the way their Nanny does her job which have absolutely nothing to do w/abuse & neglect.

So in my personal opinion -
Cameras only add problems + should not be installed.

If a parent finds themselves actually concerned enough to install a camera in their home to watch the Nanny, then that is a clear sign (in my opinion!) that they are not emotionally ready to go back to work.

Facial expressions?! Omg your poor nanny. I’d love to see YOUR facial expressions when you’re with you own kid 10-12hrs a day. This is really sad. Your poor nanny. Not even allowed a moment to just zone out.

The cameras aren’t good enough to get facial expressions! One per room mounted high is fine. A separate camera or two mounted over the crib so you and nanny can check on the baby.

Facial expressions? Good god. We have no cameras, and I have no desire to put them in. What would I do, watch my nanny all day? Who does that?

What is your goal with the nanny cams? As a nanny, I am fine working with cameras, but I want to know where they are and if there is camera coverage over every inch of the house other than the bathroom, I would consider that a major drawback.

Put cameras over the areas the children will be in most: bedrooms, playroom, living room, maybe kitchen. One per room is plenty. If you truly think your nanny is going to be sneaking your kid into the foyer to beat them then you need a different vetting process. The point of cameras should be for you to have a way to check in on your kid to make yourself feel better and for you to have an overview of their day.


The only reason to have camera coverage over the entire house is if you feel that you need to micromanage every moment of your child’s day (in which case you are not a good candidate for nanny care) or if you are worried that your nanny with rob you or abuse the children (in which case you either need to improve your hiring process or you are just a suspicious person and therefore not a good candidate for nanny care).

I miss a nanny and I encourage employers to have cameras. I want them to see how hard I work.

Should I put a camera in every room and hallways or only certain rooms? Should I mount them high to get as much of the room in there or on a table to see facial expressions/interactions better? Any other advice about nanny cams appreciated, thanks so much!
