We used to have an envelope where we'd leave our nanny cash and she'd leave the receipts. After she had been with us for a few months we gave her a credit card.
Haven't had an overnight babysitter other than nanny yet, but we always have some frozen meals in the freezer and tell evening sitters to help themselves.

This is not about compensation or me asking for money for food for myself. There is barely anything for the boys to eat either. We have tons of bread and not one slice of meat. Frozen chicken nuggets, applesauce, and box mac n cheese can only do so much. like I mentioned above, I am also responsible for their lunches because they are out for summer break. A simple tub of yogurt, chicken breast and fresh veggies in the fridge and I wouldn't need a thing. I know how to cook. Im certainly not against running to the store but there's no money here either.

off topic but he even left the car I use on E told me to search for a card to get gas or switch all the seats to his wife's car and use it. No consideration for my time at all and I was nearly late getting them to and from camp this morning because of it. These are clearly signs I need to move on.


What? So they leave debit/credit cards lying around? I’m confused. So he flat out refused to leave money for you? Wow that’s messed up. Maybe say something a long the line that you’re gonna go buy groceries and expect to be reimbursed. Do you and them have iPhones? If so, they couldn’t even Apple you $50???

I think perhaps you should move on to another thread. This isn’t about what you do on your jobs or what I do or don’t mind doing. I asked EMPLOYERS what they do when they have an over night sitter. See the title? The things that I’ve mentioned are things that occurred last minute which I was not expecting and put a constraint on my travel time. I move seats all the time from one car to another and Ingo above and beyond in other areas for them. This is about a prepared environment and being considerate.

Then move in to a more professional family. Personally, I have no problem switching seats, I do it often. I also have no problem getting gas or groceries, but I am reimbursed without question (I would never take advantage of that). So I don’t agree with your frustrations, BUT I do feel that the level of professionalism that I have with my family may be different than yours and therefore I personally feel different. If they were low on food and I needed to pick things up for the kids, that would never be a problem. But I do honestly bring a bag of groceries when staying for the weekend, though I am not saying that should be expected. My overnight rate is high, so I just feel like it’s the right thing to do, for me personally.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. Im actually beginning to notice a lot of thoughtlessness in them and it saddens me deeply because I love my charges and have been with them for a long time. I have been putting it off and hoping for a change but I am starting to look for a new position.

Yes, they should either have asked you what you wanted or given you money. If I were you, I would call them and ask what they intend to do about paying you for food. Also, I would never stay overnight for them again and I would start looking for a new job. There is no excuse for such egregious thoughtlessness.

My mb is out of town for business and dB leaves today to go also. They asked me 2 months ago to stay over tonight and tomorrow night until around 10 pm so basically 2 nights. They have some kid food like microwave nuggets in the freezer and apples cereal milk etc. but there’s nothing that grown ups eat like vegetables or meat to cook. They usually have a rotisserie chicken and sandwich meat but not even that. The kids aren’t eating lunch at school so that’s a lot of meals and I asked him to leave me cash for food and he seemed irritated. Was I wrong to expect food for myself to be provided and more for them? Also shouldn’t they leave a debit card or cash behind anyways just in case something comes up? His irritation has rubbed me the wrong way.

My charges are all boys 7,4 and 1 and half years old.
