Nanny here- I think that’s totally reasonable. The only thibg is that I don’t love working late, as you can do anything after work and now you can’t do much in the morning because what can you do before 11?

Hi, OP here. We will keep her weekly pay the same as current (flat rate), but was wanting to just shift her weekday house so something like 11-7 or 12-8. It seems that it’s within reason to ask of that if she’s also on board with that. Will talk to her, thanks for the feedback!

Night owl here. I’d love those hours (12-9). However, I doubt that OP wants that. Most likely 12-6/7, then a date night and weekend.

How do you expect to keep the nanny when she’s going form full time to part time hours? No, readjusting her hours would not work. Her bills don’t change just because your needs change. Could YOU afford to make 50% of your salary? Give her plenty of notice and a reference and then find an afternoon nanny.

Opps read the post again. Yes it seems OP wants to shift hours

My boss was able to keep me because she kept my weekly pay the same. You can’t ask her to go from full time to part time and reduce her pay if you want to keep her.

Could you have her do child centered clean up things during the hours the youngest is in school? If she drives woth the kids could she do pick up and drop off? Some suggestions would be child laundry, switching over the closests, organizing toys and books, children’s grocery store items (milk and bread type thing), start on dinner prep (chopping veggies).
Others are suggesting talking woth your nanny, which is the best option. But when I was a nanny and the children were in school I would do work on the list above. They had me working even when the kids were in school, Incase of sickness or weather or holidays.

You need to speak with her. If you’re going to reduce her hours yet pay her the same, she’s in luck. Nobody’s gets paid for not working. I’d be thrilled to keep this job. However, you should ask her to be available for sick days and breaks since you’ll be paying her the same. Seems only fair.

What is your plan for holiday breaks and any snow/sick days? I would keep nanny with similar hours and maybe shift them an hour or 2 later at least until your younger starts full day school. I have a flexible job for handling random days off so when my DC started full day with K and could do camps on holiday breaks, we switched to after school sitter.

If her weekly pay is the same. She would be crazy to quit.

You need to have this discussion with your nanny. None of us can answer your question.

Our nanny wanted to shift her hours to 12 to 7 - it worked better for her own family. She is also great about going back to full days for the countless school holidays and sick days (extra pay, of course).

If you are paying her the same there should be no problem.

Hi all,

We have a full time nanny from 8-5 for our youngest (2.5 yo). Older (5 yo) is in preschool till 3 so she has both kids from 3-5pm. The younger will be starting half day preschool in the fall from 9-12:30. We want to keep the nanny but won’t need her from 8-12. Has anyone been in this situation and made it work? Is it reasonable to ask nanny to adjust hours? If not, what are some alternatives you have used to make it work? We will keep her pay the same.
