Might depend on your state, but it's the same for me, too. They won't add a driver until they have a US DL. Until then they are covered because we gave them permission to drive our vehicle (similar to if you lend a car to a friend or family member for whatever reason).

We always called our insurance company to be sure but they said to just call back when she gets her VA license. So you may find that is the response. It's when the AP got the VA license that they wanted her name and age (matters a lot).

PP above is correct. You add AP to your existing insurance as a driver on your existing policy using their international driver's license. It will be expensive. Our family has 3 cars, one is mine, one is my wife's and one is for the au pair. We pay about the same for the AP car as for both of our other cars combined.

Yes, on Day 1 you call your insurance and add her. When she gets her DL you call again. They will tell you premium differential each time.

I guess theoretically you can shop around, but I’d presume the beat differential will be at whatever company you already have history with. When it is brand new account it might be hard for them accepting a younger driver... but you can check if you have time.

How does it work before/after the AP gets their state DL?
Do you call your insurance agency as soon as AP is here and add her to the policy with her international DL?
How do you shop for the best rate if AP doesn't have US DL?
What happens when AP get her state DL, do you call insurance to update? I assume the premium goes down then?
