+1. Little too much there. Plus, how would brand new parents give references to a nanny?

If I were a nanny I would want your credit record and your criminal record. New parents could use references from their current bosses as well as bosses going 10 years back. If you haven't been working for ten years then you probably cannot afford a nanny.

Lol, I would NEVER give that info, and when I had my first child, I had NOT been working even five years, and WAS able to afford a nanny.

If you’re uncomfortable with offering a couple of character references, I’d wonder why. And probably would take a pass on you.

But a Nanny position is a whole different ball game.

The Nanny is working in a private home w/people she herself has just met.
I totally get why she could be concerned about her own personal safety, especially in the beginning.

Any family who would refuse to submit to a background check would be a huge red flag that something is off.

Companies have established reputations and regulations, Einstein.

OP is exactly correct. When agencies vet families, don’t the parents have to produce a couple of reference letters? Yes, they do. Nannies should expect the same. No one wants to worry about a creepy dad rapist when mom is on a business trip. Yes, nannies AND au pairs have been forced to confront sexual assault.

Parents should offer a couple of character reference letters. Nothing of course is guaranteed, but it would help.

Nothing for nothing but a few years back I read on here something similar and the point was that the nanny found out that the father was in jail before they hired her. So getting background information and references from families isn’t the worst thing. Don’t forget, we are alone in their homes. How many dads hit on nannies ... it goes on and on and on

Mb here. In all fairness, very few occupations have the same intimacy as the nanny industry. You're working solo in someone else's house with someone's kids. You have more protection in a corporate world than you do in a nanny world. So yes,.I can see why nannies would want references too.

Hey I hear you!
I know sometimes it’s very hard and we nannies get our hearts broken
But....through my experience working for more than 12 years as a nanny and going through bad experiences just like now too,
I came to the conclusion I’m finally will be speaking up lol
It really is our own fault that we let these people treat us poorly
Remember, you cannot change a human being, you cannot change anybody
All you can do is change your own situation.
Save up money, and as soon as a problem happens, Speak up!!!!
If you can’t speak up, write a note and try through text, and if not, then just give 2 weeks notice and leave.
And trust me, if only takes one time to speak up! Once you do it one time, you will see how easy it is to speak up
more and more!
There’s really nothing we can do, there’s no laws regarding nannies.
Families will always take advantage, by not paying a fair rate, increasing hours workload ....
Good luck! If you want you can share your bad experience

When we are going to apply for a job, we nannies should have the right to ask for references from the parents who want to employ us. I see with great concern that for the need to have a job we expose ourselves to each type of person, I think that of every ten nannies, only three find good families that value them, that give them an important place. The parents do not understand nu that they leave in our hands their most important treasures, which are the people with the most contact children have in their first years of life. Today I see with great sadness the humiliations that we have to go through from the moment of the interview. To all parents who read this, please put a hand in your heart, nannies are human beings, we feel, we have problems that maybe you are far from knowing, we suffer and even we have the best aptitude towards your children. Learn to value, I know that this is not taught by money but by the human quality of each one. Nannies let us make a single voice, we demand rights, respect. Share and spread this message, maybe if you are in this situation, this type of message can reach your employers and make them think and reflect a little. Let the employers understand that we are also human. [u]
