I think the holidays that fall on nanny’s work days should be paid, but not any others. Maybe Christmas, but just add that into her bonus.

That’s totally different. When you state part-time, most people think you mean before or after school. You have a nanny split, so $20/hour for that is much more reasonable than $20/hour for part-time hours for premium time of day.

Good luck, OP.

That is more than a fair rate.
Generous even.

I think the majority of you that answered are not giving good advice.
No offense.
But the poster who mentioned up to $25/Hr??!

Just because a job is part/time.
Trust me....
No other part-time jobs in the world pay out more salary.
In fact, the opposite.

Full-timers get more benefits like company stocks, 401K, health insurance, etc.
Part-timers rarely get as much.

So to say that part-time Nannies should earn more is nonsense.

OP Here. Thanks, this was my thought on it.

Also, she doesn't want more hours. She has another family she's with for another 16 ish hours a week and she has a child so she wants to be home enough for the child.

Then pay what you want and see how long she stays.

16 hours a week isn't much and $20/hr for a PT job isn't very high. I'd also want all holidays paid, otherwise, it would just benefit me to look for a higher paying job...

Your holidays sound fine, but you’re going to lose her soon. $20 for 16 hours is only $320 gross; nobody can live on that. And the after school hours are the most necessary. Most people in this area pay a premium for 10-25 hours after school.

This sounds reasonable but the Nanny will likely be offended by this.
Especially if she asked for all paid Federal holidays initially.

OP, I think your current set-up is good for less than part-time.
Your Nanny sounds like she has been chatting w/some full-time Nannies & wants their benefits, but you should refrain.

Alternatively, give her all of the holidays, but prorate the holiday pay based on her schedule (so if she is 16 hours/week, that's 40% time, so she gets 40% of a day's pay for each holiday).

I would give the holiday off if she would normally be working on that day. Eg.; she works Tue-Fri, she does not get paid for Mondays and any holidays that fall on Monday.

Are her hours variable or is it a set schedule?

Help! I need your input on this situation.

We've had our nanny for 6 months. She works part-time averaging about 16 hours a week at 20$/hr. We have one child who is at school for half the days our nanny is with us. This was in an effort to compromise on the number of hours a week. While she is home she does some house work. Things are going well.

When we hired her, she asked about holidays. We said that we would give paid time off for Christmas, New Years, 4th of July, Labor Day. Last year we also gave Memorial day because we were away. This is 50% of the federal holidays which is about the percentage of hours out of 40 she is with us each week.

Today she asked to have all federal holidays paid.

I personally think this is too much. She is part time, has only been with us 6 months, makes a competitive hourly rate for 1 kid who she is only with part of the time, and has already been given more holiday paid time than agreed on. We also gave a substantial Christmas bonus and other small monetary gifts for various reasons.

What does the DCUM world think?
