It is legal ONLY in public areas in your home (no bathrooms or if she’s a live-in you can’t have a camera in her room without consent). However, not informing candidates says a lot about you and if nanny finds out, she will 100% leave!! Because their is no trust: not because you don’t trust her but the fact you didn’t share this information and it’s sneaky.
Why wouldn’t you inform the nanny about the cameras? It’s very common even in daycares to have cameras and have all parties aware of it.
A lot of people have cameras in the house for safety regardless of a nanny.

No, it is not legal in my state - you would need to check Virginia law on sound and image. But why would you want to not inform an employee that he/she is being recorded?
It is legal in EVERY STATE. Stores have CCTV's. Its deceptive nannies like you that give all of us a bad name.
Stores in California don’t have cameras with sound unless they have a sign saying they are monitored. I am not a nanny, so your bad name is all your own.
Our nanny, who is amazing, requested cameras in our home.
