What is wrong with getting our monies worth. Most of us at our job don't have the luxaary to take breaks when the child is sleeping or napping!

I have MLK Day off paid per contract. We all agreed to this. They seemed to understand how holidays, guaranteed hours and PTO worked. These people are graduates of top universities with impressive degrees and respectable careers. How could they not?

They wanted me to work Sunday for about 6 hours and I agreed. Well, it seems like they think this is how holidays work. I’m off on the holiday with pay but just make up the day on a weekend. When I showed them our contract they seemed genuinely confused and said, “oh, we didn’t think of it like that....”

You didn’t think paid vacation/holidays meant what they’ve meant for decades and decades for most working people including you? Do you think they’re really that clueless or do you think they think I’m stupid enough to be manipulated into working a Sunday to cover my paid holiday?

I’ll work a Sunday but that’s all OT pay.

You won't be getting Over Time btw. Call it a hunch. Let us know though.

When you give a person who doesn’t usually have power and control a little bit of power they tend to abuse it.

No. She is working 20-25 and getting paid for 40 so she does not want to rock to boat. Guaranteed it will bite you in the ass - a month will come where you work 40 hours every day for the month and then have a Monday off for a holiday and they still want Saturday for free. The side deal will quickly become the new normal. You have two choices keep it and reap the benefits knowing st some point you will lose out or put it in writing and know the gravy train might end.

Well, I think your mistake is i the 'unspoken' part. Shifting hours is not that unusual, but you'd be better off putting it in writing. You could say "a maximum of six (or eight or whatever) hours can be rolled over into a single weekend day" (or whatever you agree.

You're working 20-25 hours and getting paid 30, that's a pretty sweet gig and i think you realize it...

new poster here

I think it's very clear. The parents want OP to "make up" the Monday hours on Sunday.

I would actually have asked them upfront if Sunday will be paid or not.

If not...then NO way would I work for free.

Even Martin Luther King would agree that would be a huge injustice.
