Op, you have to do what’s best for you and with this idiot in office, who knows how long this will continue. If you can’t hold out and need a job now, then, you have to seek a different position. You will then have to determine if you want to continue with your family (if you get hired between now and then) or sign on with the other family when they are able to retain you. Being a nanny is no different then any other job. If you find a better paying position go with it even if you just started a new job. You have to focus on you and make sure you’re set financially!

The Nanny market is very saturated. We just found out a Nanny was unemployed for over 4 months due to her old-age and highly competitive market. Nannies are a dime a dozen and the GOOD nannies are willing to work when the baby is sleeping. 10 -15 minute breaks is fine, and is 'normal' anymore than that and you are cheating your employer!

Ha! I take 1-6 months off between positions, by choice. Don’t assume that 4 months wasn’t also by the nanny’s choice.

Its impacting a lot of people. Most feds will be paid back so if they are high income they should have savings and it doesn't make sense not to start you as they will need child care when they go back. If they are contractor, they will not get paid nor paid back. Most people cut back shopping, services anything luxury so a lot of secondary folks are going to be very hurt by this too. I'd look for another job as if they don't have savings to cover this stuff, then what does future look like when this happens yearly now.
