I had an AP who napped on the sofa with my infant. She had the infant on the inside - as she explained it - so the infant doesn't roll off the sofa. I told her that was unacceptable. My baby could have suffocated between the sofa and her sleeping body. She even told me it was okay because she did that with her previous host family (she was a rematch) and nothing bad happened. I was speechless. My agency sent her packing home.

So to answer OP's question ... Would you consider this a safety issue? YES YES YES

... and why AP is falling asleep anyway? Some countries are known to have an afternoon nap culture, even for working adults. Some AP are used to taking a nap. You need to screen them out or be very vigilant if your AP comes from one of those countries.

I am an Au pair who sometimes nap when the baby naps (he has his own crib in my bedroom next to my bed), I think it's paramount you tell her she is not to fall asleep with baby on the couch or in her arms. It's a hazard and while there is 99% chance he will be okay, you really don't want to risk that 1% chance of an accident happening.

If sitting on the couch means she will drift off to sleep she needs to find other ways to put him down for a nap safely.

How old is the baby? I'd talk with the AP about SIDS and positioning but it could be fine if it's an older baby.

And to the haters - do you remember the pleasure of napping with a baby? It's one of the moments of connection with an age of kid that can be hard and frustrating! Let her enjoy those cozy moments too...

Just ask her to not fall asleep with the baby on her, it is dangerous. With an AP, you generally have to teach a lot of things bs having an experienced nanny that has been through this phase many times as eel as researched/studied various topics. Additionally, in response to PP, I do not know a single career nanny that naps on the job, but maybe a college student?

How many months old is the baby?

My sister has always slept 10-12 hours a day. Yes she slept after teaching all day and before caring for her daughter a few hours in the afternoon/evening. That kid knew perfectly well how to entertain herself even at 2.5 years old. They alwyas co-slept as they lived in a studio apartment.

Most SAHMs and many nannies nap when there’s only one infant. It’s mentally and emotionally draining to be cooped up with an infant, narrating and doing everything for the child who can’t respond verbally.

Some people need more sleep than others so yes, it can be.

She is supposed to be working, she shouldn't nap at all. With or without the baby.

Put a PNP in the living room and tell her she's welcome nap on the couch but baby needs to be in a crib or PNP.

Are you sure she didn’t mean that she naps while baby is napping in his or her crib.

AP has admitted to napping with the baby, usually on the couch. We’re past newborn stage but not out of the risk for SIDS age.

Would you consider this a safety issue? If so, why? Is it AP could still suffocate the baby or not wake up to know baby is suffocating? Or that baby might wake up and fall off the couch before AP wakes up?

I have no idea why AP is falling asleep anyway. She’s not an out all night partier, but maybe she’s in her room watching videos too late?
