She's older, so the exchange rates are very high, above $1000 per month, and quotes i saw online indicate that SHOP rates are closer to $600. I spent a lot of time calling insurance agencies and a few tax advisors to try to enroll in SHOP and was told it's not possible unless my 'business' (i am a Virginia 'business' to employee a household employee, pay taxes and unemployment insurance, etc.) can report revenue of more than approx. $12k/year. Given that my registered business generates no revenue i cannot apply for SHOP.
Still waiting to get the final paperwork back from Kaiser but they told me it was fine to be a household employer, as did the guy I talked to at the SHOP helpline number on healthcare.gov. I’ll report back once it’s all finalized.
