You ask the nanny what she wants!

Profession temp nannies are paid legally. Some nannies will pick up a temp position while a family is away for an extended period and/or between positions, and then it’s usyally based on whether the nanny usually accepts cash or demands legal payment.

It’s not a dumb question and not necessarily true. If the nanny does a lot of temp positions, she needs verifiable income. Also, the employer may not be able to risk paying someone illegally. If you and nanny are comfortable with it, I recommend paying cash, but you’ll need to talk with her.

I do my own payroll, so still do W2 for anyone earning over the minimum.

I have paid in cash and through the payroll - depending on how long the nanny was with us. We used the guidelines about number of hours working for us to determine whether or not it hit the threshhold for having to pay taxes.

In the equivalent situation to you, where we had a longterm temporary nanny (5 weeks) we used our payroll system.

It would be a headache to set up payroll for someone working only a few weeks.

I would just pay her in cash or write her a check at the end of every week.

We just paid cash in the same situation. But yes, you could set them up on the same payroll system, which is what you should technically do.

Our nanny is going to be out on leave for about a month. We are seeking a temporary nanny to fill in for her for about 3-4 weeks. We currently use one of those online payroll systems to pay our nanny which does her direct deposit and takes out the employer/employee taxes etc etc. For someone we will hire for just a few weeks, is it common to put them on a similar online payroll system? Has anyone had any experience with this for short term hires? Not sure what the mechanics are.
