Like any luxury it will cost you.

If you can’t afford a nanny, find alternative care like daycare.

Bar none.

The reasons why are that the family does not have to wake their child up early in order to drop them off somewhere else.
And if they are stuck in traffic on the way home, they don’t have to be penalized for being late
.

The child benefits by receiving personal, one-on-one attention + care.
They also get the luxury of napping in their own bed, eating their own food as well as playing w/their own toys.

The biggest benefit is that they are not exposed on a daily basis to unwanted germs.

I find paying the extra dollars is a great investment in your child.

But

So you’re the parent who doesn’t pay nanny when you’re late?!

Most parents simply can't afford to outsource their child care.

Let's just be honest.

We are starting the Nanny Hunt, and I am blown away at the current prices people are paying. I have seen prices range from 15.00 at the hyper-low end to around 35.00 an hour! This doesn't even include the over-time, vacation pay, and other benefits. I understand at least from this forum that many of you are paying these rates (unless its spam?), and I was just wondering the following:

1. What is your current Location

2. What is your joint income

3. What is the Price of your Nanny

4. How many hours do you employe her

5. How many kids is she watching?

I just can't see how any person making less then 150k can afford a Nanny at these rates? Am I wrong.

You're right, that person can't.

It may be helpful to think of nanny care as the top end of the continuum of childcare options. I'm sure you accept the notion that in this world there is H&M and Chanel, Hondas and Rolls Royces, economy travel and personal jets. Apply this logic to childcare. A personal nanny is the top end of the childcare range. If you can't afford that, it's OK - just like it's OK that you can't afford Chanel or personal jet travel. There are many good options below nanny care.

I do not think there are many Nannies that actually make as much money as they state in this forum.

Even if you are paying fully illegally, you're really not going to find someone for less than $500/wk.

Maybe look into a nanny share. It won't be half the cost, but it will be like 2/3 the cost, in part because you'll also share additional expenses like mileage reimbursement and petty cash.

Nanny here (working in DC).

Just like any job, I researched the employer but in this case it was a little different because I wouldn’t need to know this much working for a company: where they work, the average salary for their position, their rent/mortgage etc. I need to know you can afford to pay me! And, no matter how sweet, nice, fun a person may be, if they can get you for $5 they will pay you $5 even if they could afford 100x that. I’m in a share and both families are married and each family brings home over 200k and have high demanding jobs. I make 75k for 3 children and work 40 hours. Anything over 40 is paid in cash (most cases they need an extra hour or it’s babysitting). I have most federal holidays off, no healthcare and they don’t pay for meals but I’m welcomed to anything in their house. However, they did offer to buy stuff in the beginning, which I declined but I should have taken them up on their offer

This is why you don’t employ a nanny if you can’t afford it. The cost of a nanny is not cheap! If you are looking to pay on the lower end, then you better offer one hell of a package (extra PTO days, all federal holidays and possibly a contribution towards food— I assume healthcare will be out of the question). I know some families who pay $30-50 per week towards the nannies groceries/ meals for paying a lower rate.

The other thing is, if you really need a nanny and can’t afford it, you will get a nanny but she will be on the next train smoking when an opportunity to make more comes around. It’s not worth it. Yes, you can find another nanny who may possibly do the same thing (leave) but think about your child who will have multiple nannies in and out of his/her life.

And $40K is on the low end. More likely is $50-$60K.

You are not wrong. A full-time nanny, paid legally, is going to cost you a minimum of $40K/year, unless you aren't really using her full time.

Poor you. Nannies also need housing, food, clothing, and all living expenses that you have. Being a nanny is hard work and they deserve more than a "livable" wage. Obviously, you cannot afford a nanny and you find less expensive child care options. If you can't even afford day care then you shouldn't even be having a child! Childcare is the most important thing to consider when deciding to have a child!
