Effect on the nanny notwithstanding, it's a lot worse for the parent than the nanny. You are not a selfish jerk, you just had a lot on your plate and messed up. Explain it that way and give the nanny a belated gift. I'm sure she'll understand given the cirumstances.

But she remembered mine today and bought me flowers.
It was her birthday last month and I have been so caught up in my divorce that it slipped my mind. I only remembered today when she came in with a gift for me.
Do I acknowledge I missed it and apologize? I feel very embarrassed.
