Read a book during independent play. When they are napping sure use your phone.

Agree with the don't ask about it. One family asked me to not use my phone even for just a quick text to family. I mostly followed through with that. But my last two jobs they didn't mention it so I use it when I want. Ignore the high horse nannies.

I would not ask. If they are anti you using your phone they need to tell you up front.

I would ask what their policy is on screen time before you start. I am not a huge screen person but if you have a sick child or a child transitioning out of nap time that needs some down time in the afternoon I think its nice to have the option. My family comes home anywhere between 5-545 so I let the kids watch TV at 5 ( they are 2 and 4) so we are not in the middle of something when the parents walk in. The parents know we dont watch TV during the day so are ok with it being on at 5 and the house is tidy when they walk in.

You are directly replying to my post. If you are in any way implying that I am somehow wrong for occasionally using my phone when my charges are present, I firmly disagree. Just today I looked up the sign for goat, which obviously I want to look up when we are looking at the goats. Or I may need to pull up a recipe for play dough, or whatever. Very different than what I am doing now, during nap time while I’m eating lunch.

To answer the actual question, you don’t ask. If tv is an option they will let you know. Every family I have worked for that didn’t care about tv has said, we have all the cable channels and Netflix, watch what you like.

Families that care will make it known that tv and your cell should not be used at work.

Kids under 2 should NOT have screen time, and I won’t provide access. Between 2 and 5, I’ll allow educational screens if the parents allow, for a maximum of 30 minutes. Anyone over 5 may earn up to 1 hour (with parent permission) by completing extra chores, extra physical activity AND extra educational work. 5 minutes of each earns 5 minutes screen time, and it’s up to the child to decide to earn or not.

How old is your new charge OP?

The family likely will not have an issue w/you using your phone while she is napping.
At least none of mine have.

However, they likely will not want you to be distracted while she plays nearby, even if you are right in front of her.

I suggest you ask them about this just as you posted your question to us.

I use my my cell phone when my charge is napping or (some times when she playing with himself. The family never had any issue about that.
My charge has screen time for 30 min.
How I could ask to new family about using my cell phone and screen time?
