Any time your area has a heat advisory in effect is a no no.
Or when the temperature is 79-82 degrees or higher.

Your Nanny does not have to stay inside all day w/a child with cabin fever.

If her vehicle has A/C she can drive him to an indoor mall w/a play structure, a local family friendly restaurant for lunch or even an air-conditioned library for storytelling.
Or they can just walk around Target for awhile.

Good grief, where do you live?? That is the normal summer temperature in most of the country. Obviously people do not stay inside every day it hits 79...that's considered the "good" summer weather for outdoor play where I live!

Agreed that 90+ is hot for outdoor activities, with the possible exception of splash parks. Even high 80s if it's super humid and muggy might be good for staying indoors. Have a few good air-conditioned activities like the library or area children's museums in rotation, especially if your home is not air-conditioned.

Charlie Brown:

Just kidding!

I live in SoCal and 79 degrees w/humidity is a killer for me.
Us SoCal people acknowledge that we are common weather wimps as well.

I grew up in the desert, where we can easily get 110+ temps. If there was a heat advisory out, we didn’t go outside. The general rule for us is go out in the morning, and in the late afternoon/ early evening, when the sun isn’t at its peak. Put on a hat and sunblock and drink water. Also the pool, or even a hose in the front yard will help cool them all off.

90+ is fine to go outside, just don't do it for a long time and try to stay in shade or water activities.

What hours does your nanny work? I am outside daily with my charges but I also start work at 7:00. I get the kids up and grab fruit and pancakes to-go and we are at the park by 7:30 and wrapping up by 9, when the day starts to heat up.

I do indoor play areas or public libraries. I have about 2-3 places for indoor places I rotate. I also love public libraries because they have AC and it’s free!!! I live in LA and it’s nothing like the east coast heat, but when it’s 90° or higher, I don’t take them out.

That's basically every day here.

OP, I let my nanny use her best judgment. She will take them to a more shaded playground on super hot days, and I make sure she pushes water. We also don't have her take them out in the heat of the day - mornings instead of afternoons. No issues.

I don’t know where here is.

You can use the National Weather Service— it will tell you when it’s dangerous to be out or if your time should be limited. That’s what we used in daycare so I use the same thing for being a nanny. It’s better to go out in the AM but lately it’s been 90 degrees by 9AM. It’s good to have indoor play areas to go to that aren’t too far (close drive or access to a metro within a 5/10 minute walk). Anything over 90, kids shouldn’t be out for longer than 30 minutes.

If they’re 3+ years, push water, slather with sunscreen (even in shade), wear clothing that breathes, and nannies drives to and from the destination, but no time limit. Between 1 and 3 years, all of the above plus a reasonable time limit (2 hours maximum for mornings, 45 minutes afternoons). For under 1 year, nothing above 95 heat index, 60 minute mornings, and 30 minute afternoons.

On very hot days, I generally suggest the pool in the morning, which totally wipes them out without overheating. When the pool is not a good choice, they do indoor play spaces for a couple of hours.

If there is an actual heat advisory in effect. Otherwise, just use common-sense precautions--avoid midday, stay in the shade, stay hydrated.

I have very active 20 month old kids that don't like to be indoors for too long. They are used to spending several hours in a row at the playground. However, with this heat and humidity I feel it's just not reasonable to have the nanny and kids out. I certainly wouldn't spend more than 15 mins out in this weather. At what temperature do you think it's just better to stay in? Or if going out, for how long? Thanks!
