Thank you all for your responses. I always feel inclined to share why I’m asking for PTO.

MB here and I think this request is completely fine. I do agree you should use your PTO since that's what you have it for.

Like the poster above said, I know that you have a life outside being our nanny and I love to hear about it. I think a concert is a perfect reason to use PTO; I've done it from my own job and would think nothing of my nanny doing the same.

MB here. You can use your time for whatever you choose OP. It's not my business, but I would have no problem w/ a request like this. I'd enjoy hearing about the concert and might be a little envious.

Our nanny got tix to see Adele a couple of years ago and it was a scenario just like this one - except we also worked it out so she could come in late the next morning since it was such a late night.

You're allowed to have a life!!

I advise you to let them know NOW so two months should be enough time for them to secure back-up or plan ahead.

I wouldn’t tell them specifically the reason unless you feel confident that they will be okay w/it.

I would just take the entire day off -
It would let you sleep in + allow plenty of time to get ready.

Good luck!

Just ask. And don't mention what it is for. They're your employers, not your friends.

I get the concert is important to you but maybe they don't care and won't understand

Take the time off and use your PTO--that's what it's there for, and you do need it.

As an employer I would not be okay with unpaid time but would be completely fine with you using vacation hours.

Take a vacation day - the whole day. That is what they are for. Give your employers plenty of notice and don’t make things so complicated.

I’m anti-unpaid time. First, you expect the day off, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get it like there is with pto (though days may need to be flexible for that). Second, many families budget pto based on what they can reasonably accommodate; assuming some other family member can cover is not a good idea. Third, many families prefer to have the whole day or none.

Just request the whole day. No need to explain what it’s for.

It’s called personal time for a reason. It’s not rude and they don’t need to know why you need the day off or why you need to leave early. We all do it- special things come up and more than likely, it happens during working hours.

Just ask for the day off. Use your PTO or vacation. Tell your employer sooner rather than later.

I recently booked tickets in September to see one of my favorite artists. However, it’s on a Friday at 7 pm and I need to be there by 5. I usually work 8-5. I’m planning on asking to leave work around 1 pm that day. However, I feel bad for asking for time off to go to a concert. Is it rude to ask for time off to a concert? Should I be honest? If I tell her I’m going to a concert I would request NOT to be paid and save my hours of PTO for when I actually need it. Thoughts or concerns? Also, their grandmother is coming to stay with them from September 15-30, so in case they can’t find back up care grandma might be able to lend a hand. In addition, MB works from home part time.
