If your AP attends a safe driving course, your premium could decrease. German drivers were cheaper for us to insure, regardless of age.

We have a Mazda 3 too; 26 year old AP, with new US DL - no increase in premium.

This doesn't make any sense. No increase in premium for adding a 26 year old driver on your car who has never driven in the US before and just got her license? Did you lie and say that the AP will never drive the car?

Your comment is really rude , accusing me of lying. AP is a listed driver on the policy like any other person in my household. Different insurance companies have different rules. I was surprised too but that's what my agent told me.

Another thing that seems to matter is how many cars you have. Our insurance always counts the AP as the "primary" driver on one ar because we had 3-4 vehicles. So 3 drivers cost more than 2 drivers with the same # of cars.

OUr insurance company took into account her age, her accident history (none) and our history (none) and did not increase our rates at all.
We were honest about her driving to/from school and occasionally on the weekends. That was the truth.
Our rates did not change though they did recommend some umbrella policy that we never actually took out.

PP with $250.month increase - you are either getting royally screwed by your insurance company or this is a typo. Shop around! Our insurance rate rose approx $500 a year with addition of AP (female, over 21 but under 25) and remained that way through three au pairs of same age with only very modest adjustments.

I also had no increase with a 26 year old with Statefarm. With a 21 year old, it was about $450 a year increase.

For our male au pair insurance increased by maybe $200-$250 a month.

It's higher for younger APs
It depends on the # of cars you have and their type (Infiniti vs. Ford)

What insurance are you with?

You should always shop around but that’s comparable to the increase in my car insurance.
