My father smoked and hugged and kissed me every morning and evening. I am in excellent health. Get a grip!

I grew up not wearing a seat belt. We now consider that neglect. When you know better you do better. My ancestors smoked and I don’t think it made them bad people because they didn’t know better. Now people know the choice they are making.

I would be mad because the babysitter left the house. She has one job once the kids are asleep - stay in the house and be present in case of problems (nightmares, waking up sick, waking up for water... whatever). My kids would be really worried if they woke up and no adult was home.

I would be annoyed at the lingering smell of smoke that would likely be in my house based on past experience with smokers, but that would frankly be secondary to me to leaving the house. She showed very bad judgement.

Wow, dramatic much?

If it’s that serious to her, she should’ve asked the sitter beforehand if she was a smoker. I mean, like others said, she waited until after the kids were asleep and went out for a few minutes. Not exactly a case of neglect or abuse going on here.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone else to her. Even if you know they don’t smoke, she may inevitably find some other flaw in them and again, blame you for it.

Mb thinks sitter is horrible for lying and not being honest about her smoking habit. Mb then proceeded to fish about her personal life through me. So I kind of feel like she blames me for having referred her.

Did your MB ask her if she smoked? Because if she didn't, then there was no lie.

And your MB sounds pretty awful.

Op here and MB didn’t ask. Which seems odd to me bc she asked me if I smoked or did drugs.

Don't worry about it, and don't refer people who are smokers to babysit.

You didn't know. It was one time. It's not a big deal.

While I despise cigarettes & am annoyed at those that choose to engage in this dirty, gross habit...
I think “furious” is an overreaction for what the babysitter did.

She waited for the kids to go to bed AND she then went outside to smoke.
It was highly unlikely the children would be exposed to any type of toxic fumes.

And this is partly why I do not like cameras.
They should be used to catch people committing a crime such as stealing, trespassing, breaking + entering or even child abuse/neglect.

Parents will see something benign such as this & totally freak out.

I know - I know, this is 2018 and we live in the age of digital everything.
People have every right to install security cameras on their property.

But examples such as yours shows the downside as well.
I think the babysitter did nothing wrong ~
If smoking outside/on the property was such an important issue w/your MB to begin with, then it was ENTIRELY up to HER to lay out the ground rules before hire.

I think this is not your problem. And "furious" seems like an overreaction to me. The sitter went outside to smoke, and she only did it after the kids were asleep. She wasn't smoking in front of the kids or while they were awake.

MB recently told me a babysitter I referred to them took a smoke break one day while she was sitting the kids on date night. Bed time is at 8 Pm for the charges and apparently around 9 pm the sitter went outside to the front yard and started smoking a cigarette for about 10 mins. MB is furious because she saw it through the camera. I really don’t know why she was looking at the cameras, but I believe that one of the camera sensors alerted her in an email that there was movement. Anyway, I feel really bad that this happened bc MB is furious. MB won’t be using this sitter anymore and canceled a night they had planned in advance. Any thoughts here? I don’t think that sitter should’ve smoked, but I think MB should have asked the sitter not to do that again.
