You also have to consider the benefits package offered. I've accepted lower rates than I preferred because of other perks offered.

From reading this post and others I think it is safe to deduct that there are a variety of nannies and a variety of rates. Just like for another job (consultant to be vague) there are individuals that will do the job for $60k a year and individuals that will do the job for $100k a year. They both might do a great job, but they have different backgrounds and years of experience. Same thing for nannies. You may find a great nanny that is young but motivated that will accept a lower rate to get her feet wet, or you may find a nanny with 10 years of experience that requires a higher rate. It's about figuring out what works best for you and your family.

There are many entry points to jobs, and the fact that this forum believes that all nannies should make the same rate is a little crazy - no where else in the workforce does this happen. So take a chance on a younger less experienced nanny if you need to keep your costs lower, or if you can afford it and prioritize experience, pay a higher rate.

I've had both, and honestly, my younger less experienced nannies always worked the hardest because they were just entering a field. Yes, I had to teach them a few more things, but I never once worried about the care and safety of my children.

Op there is not just a one rate “for the DC area”. Those in NWDC for instance are going to be paying more than those in Fairfax.

+1 the rates seem very high.

Of course the rates seem high when you are paying your nanny a very low wage. Op, of course there is no one set rate. Typically for ppl who can actually afford a nanny and get the truly great nannies you are paying between $12-$15 per family.

I'm actually a nanny, and insulted that you base my "worth" on inflated rates on this forum. Notice that none of the PPs listing rates actually specify which area? There are several Los Angeles nannies on this board who will chime in with their rates when the OP specifically asks about DMV rates.

As a nanny working a nanny share in the DMV, I’m insulted you don’t think your worth, time and skill are worth more than $9-$10 an hour. Sorry but it’s not an inflated rate to get paid at least between $12-$15 for a nanny share. I’ve turned down nanny share families who offered to only pay $10 bc I know the work that goes into the job and I’m aware of what other ppl are willing to pay for a service that is important to them. If that low wage is acceptable to you and makes you happy then more power to you.

It seems high bc yours is actually very low. Anything under $12 per family seems low and cheap. I find it hard to believe that a “great” nanny would take $18 for a nanny share. I feel so bad for your nanny.

Our nanny makes $25 per hour for 40 hours and then time and a half for her one child rate, 18 or 27 per hour for one child. This is a holdover from when we joined the share and the other family was footing the whole bill.

You're right in the middle of the people we know in shares in the DMV area (though they are mostly in DC or the close-in suburbs--may be different further out).

I'm a nanny about to finish my third share. They started me at $26

I would say that was low, OP. Good nannies are getting $27 to $30 now for one child.

I think you fall right in the middle—not to low or not too high. Usually it’s $10-12 per family

Hi - I'm curious what a current nanny share rate is in the DC, MD, VA area. We current have a nanny share with two 2.5 year old girls and our nanny makes $25/hour 40 hours a week and time and a half for another 10 hours or so. She gets 12 paid vacation days a year. As we are considering a raise, I'm curious where we fall in terms of pay. Thanks for your insights!
