You won’t find a professional under the table. Do it legally or choose daycare.

This. Why are you paying cash? Why didn’t you immediately write her a check? I had a family do that once (paid legally via check) they said they didn’t have the money due to a vacation payment. I made it very clear that it was 100% unacceptable and I wouldn’t tolerate being paid late. You cannot be an employer and not pay on time, period. Are you paying legally? Good luck finding a quality candidate if you’re not. In fact, most people here (myself included) have zero sympathies when things go awry if you aren’t paying legally. If you want a professional, be a professional.

This is why you don’t pay cash or accept it. Why couldn’t they write her a check? Venmo? PayPal? Zella? Transfer money? It’s sooo easy to pay someone now.

We planned to pay her the rest this week. Now I’m nervous and trying to scramble to find new childcare. Would you fire her or try to make it work?

She worked but you didn't have enough money to pay her? I don't blame her because no one works for free. It is your fault and you cannot afford a nanny.

It seems like the nanny tardiness started before the payment issue so doesn’t seem like the two are related...also if she was that unhappy about not getting full payment why would she miss the first day this week when OP told her she would get the rest of her pay. Is she giving reasons for being late? I would have a talk with her and say when you go back to work next week you need her to be on time and also apologize about the cash issue and tell her it won’t happen again.

I think she is maybe calling off and being late in hopes you might fire her. It will be easier for her to be fired than you get upset she quit. Who wants to work for someone who can’t pay them? Your nanny doesn’t seem like she wants the ob.

Op here. We planned on giving her cash at the end of the week, and realized the day of we forgot to get her the money. She wasn’t happy.

If you missed her payment, she is looking for another job. Consider daycare.
