Babysitting doesn’t reach the threshold, so you can pay by check. If you do reach the threshold, then you have a part time nanny and you need to pay taxes.

I would say ca$h is the better option since checks leave behind a tangible money/paper trail.

Cash. It’s untraceable if you’re giving it to someone.
If you’re a nanny give the cash to a family member to give to you.
