Our nanny is reliably 5-7 minutes late and it drives me nuts (yes, I've spoken to her about it several times, which helps for a few months, then she relapses a bit).

Nannies (and all employees) should be ready to work at the time from which they get paid. Not eating breakfast, going for coffee, or settling in, but actually working with the kiddos so the parents can leave for work.

Late is late. If a person is supposed to start work at 8AM and arrives at 8:01 she is technically late. Now, no one is that much of a dick to worry about a minute but 5 minutes late is unacceptable.

+1 Nanny here and I agree - five minutes late is unacceptable.

I cannot afford an educated nanny anymore (had a great nanny for my oldest) and all I am looking for now for the new baby is a woman who is on time, reliable and loves my baby.

I work in the medical field as well as my nanny cannot be late. She simply cannot be late.

Please explain how you hope the nanny will love your baby.

I am a nanny. It is not hard to love your charges. No one needs to explain how a mother can hope for that.

I am a nanny and I highly recommended a nanny I know from one of our toddler classes. This nanny got the job and has been consistently late and calls in sick at the last moment. I am so embarrassed that I ever recommended her and put her together with her new employer. Her new employers are dentists/oral surgeon and if they are late for work, every patient and person who works in the office is late all day long.

And let me nip the inevitable response in the bud here: It makes no difference what your boss does. In the world, the owner of the company gets to do a lot of things that his/her employees are not allowed to do.

I have managed, in three years, to have only been late once and that was when there was a fire on the freeway and they closed the major cross vein (Mulholland) on the hill (I am in Los Angeles which has the worst and most erratic traffic in the planet).

This. This applies to telephone use as well.

There is no excuse for being habitually late. None. That is absolutely a question to ask any reference given and stress the importance with any potential hire.

+1. As a nanny, it drives me nuts to hear nannies on this forum defending being late.

After her abysmal ability to show up on time (or even every day), being able to find references as to a candidate's reliability went to the top of my list.

I actually ask about that first. No use falling in love with someone if the relationship can't possibly work out, right?

Nanny here and I agree 100%. Nannies cannot be late or be unreliable. Period. End of discussion. It drives me nuts to see nannies pathetically trying to defend their inability to show up for work on time.
