We did 50-cent annual raises per family. That was on starting salaries of $22/hour and $24/hour, which were, at the time, at the top of the pay scale for shares in our area. While I'm sure that our nannies would have been thrilled with bigger increases, they also each cheerfully stayed through the end of the share (2.5 years).

And agreed that two families is more work than one as far as coordination and communication. Share rates in our area are slightly higher than two-child rates in the same family for this reason.

For me, it would be $1/hr increase from each family. I am working a share situation now, and it's tons more work to deal with two families. But I strongly advise having a meeting with the nanny to see where her biggest challenges are. Hopefully she can be honest with you.

How is it tons more work to deal with two families? I can see if one or both was difficult to deal with, but assuming both are relatively normal people (huge assumption, I know), what about it makes it more work?

Good childcare shared with several adults (parents and nanny, at least) requires frequent communication. And even "normal" parents have issues of some sort. Just my experience.

Every share, family and situation differs - in a previous nanny share, I received a $1 increase from one family and no increase from the other (they indicated that they could not afford to). In another share, both families did a $1 raise. Discuss with the other family, what do you think the nanny is worth and ensure you are on the same page and present a unified front when the decision has been made - even though you may disagree privately.
